TACOMA, Wash. – It didn't take much to
propel the Lewis & Clark women's tennis team to its
second straight 8-1 over Pacific Lutheran this season, as the
Pioneers once again took down the Lutes in Northwest Conference
action on Saturday, March 21. The Lutes didn't stand a chance
against a strong Pioneer side in singles, with L&C sweeping the
competition for six points. The teams other two points came from
the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles spots.
In singles, the Pioneers won each position in just two sets,
beginning with sophomore Amalia Nilsson from the No. 1 spot.
Nilsson tangoed with Ashley Brooks, winning the first set 6-1 and
the second set 6-0. Whitney DeBree took down Ashley Coats in two
6-4 sets. As a duo, Nilsson and DeBree teamed up to defeat Coats
and Ali Burnside from the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-3.
Burnsides luck wasn't any better against the Pios in singles,
as Paige Earhart made quick work of her from the No. 3 spot, 6-4,
6-4. Clio Beatty played at the No. 4 spot grabbing both her sets
6-1, while Mika Yokoyama picked up a win over Caitlyn Hoerr from
the No. 5 spot (6-3, 6-3). The Pios final singles point came from
Alix Dixon at the No. 6 spot, as the sophomore glided to a 6-2 win
in the first set and 6-3 win in the second set.
Earhart and Beatty joined forces to bring home the Pioneers eighth
and final point of the game, defeating Mary Stang and Heidi Weston
from the No. 3 doubles spot, 8-1.
The Pioneers are now 6-6 on the season and 6-6 in the NWC. The team
returns to the courts on Sunday, March 22-24 as they hit the road
for Los Angeles. The team will play five games while in California,
beginning with match-ups with California Tech and Occidental on
Sunday, March 22 with the first game set for 10:30 a.m.
