SCORE
FOREST GROVE, Ore., - The Lewis & Clark men's basketball team
rolled to a 75-61 win over Northwest Conference opponent Pacific
(Ore.) on Saturday night in Forest Grove. The Pioneers were led by
senior Tyson Papenfuss who had a game-high 27 points, shooting 9-11
from the floor. The Pioneers improve to 15-6 on the season and 9-3
in the NWC, while the Boxers slip to 8-12 overall and 3-9 in
conference.
Papenfuss led all players in points with 27, finishing 2-3 from
behind the arc and 7-8 from the charity stripe. Ross Bartlett
netted a team-high 19 points for the Boxers, while having a
game-high eight rebounds. David Berggren was the Pioneers leading
rebounder collecting seven boards, six of which were defensive.
The Pioneers grabbed possession of the scoreboard early with a
jumper from Papenfuss a minute into the contest. The two teams
would battle back and forth for the next five minutes, jockeying
for control of the game. The Pioneers would win the battle with
12:06 remaining in the period, courtesy of another jumper from
Papenfuss to take a 19-12 lead. The Boxers would try and battle
their way back into the half, cutting the Pioneer lead to five just
seconds later, but it would not be enough to discourage Lewis &
Clark. The Pioneers would apply the pressure in the closing minutes
of the half, collecting a 13 point lead with 1:24 to play when
Tyler Tsukazaki drained a 3-pointer.
Despite their best efforts, the Boxers would never be able to find
their way back into the game, as the Pioneers continued to dominate
the court. The Pioneers would jump to their largest lead of the
game with 2:30 remaining in the game after James Edwards buried two
free throws to increase the Pioneers advantage to 70-52. The Boxers
would earn a couple points back but it would not be nearly enough
to cut the gap, handing the Pioneers a convincing 75-61
victory.
The Pioneers finished .521 (25-48) from field goal range and .750
(15-20) from the free throw line. Pacific (Ore.) ended the day
shooting .404 (21-52) from the floor and .762 (16-21) from the free
throw line.
