NEWBERG, Ore., - Lewis & Clark head men's basketball coach Bob
Gaillard picked up his 500th NCAA victory on Friday night in the
Pioneers 63-49 road win over George Fox. The Pioneers improve to
14-6 on the season and 8-3 in the Northwest Conference as the team
continues to push for a berth in the NWC Tournament. The Bruins
fall to 7-13 overall and 3-8 in the NWC.
Despite falling behind in the opening seconds of the first half,
it wouldn't take long for the Pioneers to find their shooting
rhythm as they exploded to an early eight point lead. Following the
Bruins early the basket the Pioneers would make a 10-0 run that
held George Fox scoreless for five minutes.
The Pioneers would continue to run the court in the first half,
owning the majority of the possession and never allowing the Bruins
to regain control of the scoreboard. The Bruins would manage to cut
the Pioneer lead to two points as the teams headed to the half,
with the Pioneers taking a 26-24 advantage into halftime.
George Fox would come out of the gates in the second half,
grabbing is first lead since the opening seconds of the game with a
good jumper from Alex Stockner. The Bruins glory would be short
lived at James Hollins sank a shot from distance to regain the
Pioneer lead. The two teams would battle to a tie before P.J.
Taylor took charge by laying one up with 14:38 remaining in the
half, sparking a Pioneer assault. The Pioneers would go onto a 9-0
run that would increase the lead to nine points with under 10
minutes remaining.
Drake Green would give the Pioneers their first double-digit lead
with 9:10 remaining in the game after draining a 3-pointer from
distance. The Pioneers would receive back-to-back threes from both
Green and Kyle Meeuwsen to run the teams lead up to 16, their
largest of the game.
The Bruins would cut the Pioneer lead to 10 points with just over
two minutes remaining, but the Pioneers would have the final word
scoring with 00:51 on the clock for a 63-49 win.
The Pioneers shot an astounding .800 (16-20) from the charity
stripe, while finishing .362 (20-55) from field goal range. David
Berggren was the team-leading scorer with 14 points, while teammate
Tyson Papenfuss ended with 11 points. Hollins capped his night as
the games leading rebounder pulling down eight boards.
The Bruins ended .340 (17-50) from the floor and .667 (12-18) from
the free throw line. Stockner led all players in points with 18,
while Travis Toedtemeier was tied with Hollins for the game-high
eight rebounds.
Next up for the Pioneers is a meeting with Northwest Conference
and in-state opponent Pacific (Ore.) on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m.
in Forest Grove.
