LOS ANGELES, Calif., - The Lewis & Clark baseball team
nearly pulled out two victories against Occidental College on
Saturday afternoon, but were unable to hold off the Tigers dropping
game one 5-4 before falling 2-1 in game two after eight innings of
play.
Sami Morgan went 6-7 on the day, including a perfect 4-4 in game
one, while scoring two of the Pioneers four runs in the first game.
The Pioneers out hit the Tigers in both games, out hitting
Occidental 11-6 in game one and 9-7 in game two.
The Tigers jumped on top 1-0 in the first inning of action in game
one with Spencer Woolwine slowly working his way around the bases.
Morgan evened things up in second inning, leading off the inning
with a single to left field.
The Pioneers would take a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning of play
beginning with a double from Morgan that allowed him to cross the
plate just two batters later on a double from A.J. Brown.
Occidental would earn one run back at the bottom of the inning on
two hits. Lewis & Clark would take a two run lead through three
and a half more innings, before Occidental would regain the lead to
take game one 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth.
Alex St. Pierre pitched 6.2 innings for the Pioneers in game one,
before being relieved by Adam Rager and Michael Ball. Ball was
credited with the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.
Game two began as a battle of the defenses as both the Pioneers and
Tigers went scoreless through the first four and a half innings of
play. Occidental broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fifth
with a run from Alex Bukac. The Pioneers would earn a run back with
Neal Finch hitting his first home run of the season to lead off the
top of the seventh. The Tigers would try to earn a run in the
bottom of the inning, but would be unable, sending the game into
extra innings.
Occidental would put the game away in the bottom of the eighth
inning with a lead-off, solo homerun from Anthony Salsedo, giving
the Tigers a 2-1 win.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 15 for game three of
their series against Occidental. The first pitch is set for 11
a.m.
