The Pioneer baseball team finished off their four-game sweep of
the Whitman Missionaries with 8-3 (box score) and 14-4 (box score)
victories Sunday afternoon.
The games were moved to Richland High School, about 60 miles
west of Walla Walla, after overnight rain and snow left Whitman's
Borleske Stadium field in unplayable condition, with game time
being moved back two hours to accomodate the change of venue.
Once the delayed action got underway, the Pioneers lost no time
in getting on the scoreboard. Jordan Shibata (senior, Pearl City,
Hawaii) led off the game with a solo home run. The Pioneers added
three more runs in the second. Chris Estrella (senior, Henderson,
Nevada) walked to start the second. After Estrella stole second,
Roland Greene (freshman, Encinitas, Calif.) scored him on a single
to left. Hits by Michael Orr (senior, Boulder, Colo.) and Jordan
Shibata helped plate the other two to put the Pioneers up 4-0.
Whitman scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth of Pioneer
starter Tucker Laurence (freshman, San Martin, Calif.), but the
Pioneers got them back, and more, in the top of the seventh. Ryan
Kostecka (freshman, Napa, Calif.) hit a leadoff double. Jordan
Shibata walked. Sami Morgan (sophomore, San Mateo, Calif.)
reached on a bunt single to load the bases. AJ Brown (junior,
Vancouver, Wash.) hit his second home run of the season, a grand
slam, to give the Pioneers an 8-2 lead. The Missionaries scored a
lone run in the bottom of the inning, giving the Pioneers an 8-3
victory.
Tucker Laurence improved to 5-0 on the season. He
scattered eight hits, allowing three runs (two earned), walking
three, and striking out three, in the complete-game, seven-inning
effort.
In game two, it was Jordon Smiley (senior, Las Vegas, Nevada) on
the mound, earning his first victory of the season in the
Pioneers' 14-4 victory over the Missionaries.
TJ Witkowski (sophomore, Tooele, Utah) drove in the first run of
the game in the first inning, doubling in Jordan Shibata. Chris
Estrella drove in three runs in the third inning with one swing of
the bat, hitting his second home run of the season.
The Pioneers scored five runs in the fourth to put the game out
of reach for the Missionaries, staking Smiley to a 9-1 lead.
The Pioneers had five hits in the inning, including an RBI double
by Mike Orr (senior, Boulder, Colo.), sending 11 batters to the
plate.
AJ Brown hit his second home run of the day in the sixth
inning, a leadoff solo shot in the sixth. The Pioneers took
advantage of three free passes in the seventh inning to add another
three runs, winning by a score of 14-4.
Smiley worked the first six innings, allowing just three hits
and three earned runs. He walked four and struck out three. David
LaDouceur (freshman, The Dalles, Ore.) worked a scoreless seventh
inning, allowing one hit and walking one.
Chris Estrella drove in four of the Pioneer runs, going 2-4,
scoring twice.
With the wins, the Pioneers improve to 9-15 (7-13 NWC).
The Pioneers will be at home this weekend, hosting the Puget
Sound Loggers. Saturday's games will be available live on the
internet through sportsjuice.com. First pitch is at 12 noon.
