The Pioneer women improved to 8-1 in the Northwest Conference
with a 5-4 (results) victory
over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes Saturday in the tennis dome. Amalia
Nilsson (freshman, Stockholm, Sweden) stayed perfect on the season,
winning 8-3 at #1 doubles with partner Whitney DeBree (freshman,
Ketchum, Idaho), and earning a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #1 singles. The
Pioneers dropped #2 doubles, but won 8-4 a #3.
In singles, Lisa Harunaga (sophomore, Kailua, Hawaii) won
at #2 singles 6-4, 6-4. Whitney DeBree lost her first singles match
of the year, falling 7-5, 6-2. After dropping #4 and #5 singles,
the match was tied 4-4, coming down to the outcome of #6 singles.
Maggie Peach (sophomore, Bellingham, Wash.) pulled out a 6-1,6-2
victory for the Pioneers to give them the 5-4 victory over the
Lutes.
The Pioneers will battle for control of second place Sunday
morning when they take on the Whitworth Pirates. The match begins
at 10 am.
The Pioneer men fell 7-2 (results) in
Tacoma against the Lutes. Dirk Frouws (freshman, Oisterwijk,
Holland), playing at #2 singles, won 6-4, 6-2. Frouws, partnered
with George Allen (sophomore, Madison, Wisc.), earned an 8-6
victory at #1 doubles.
