The Pioneer men's basketball team earned a dominant 90-48 (box score)
victory over the George Fox Bruins in the final regular season home
game of the year. David Berggen led the Pioneers with 17 points,
going 5-5 from three-point range.
After trailing 4-2 early, the Pioneers tied the game 4-4 on a
layup by Tyson Papenfuss (junior, Clackamas, Ore.) with 15:57
remaining in the game. The Pioneers would not trail again in the
contest.
After leading by just one point, 12-11, with 13:03 remaining in
the first half, the Pioneers went on a 15-0 run, extending their
lead to 27-11 on a jump shot by David Berggren (junior, Portland,
Ore.) with just under eight minutes left in the half. The
Pioneers outscored the Bruins 21-10 in the final eight minutes of
the half to take a comfortable 48-21 lead into the break. The
Pioneers shot an impressive 65.5% from the field in the first half.
The Bruins made 9 of 25 of their field goals in the period 36.0%).
The Pioneers outscored the Bruins 42-27 in the second half to
cruise to a 90-48 victory.
With the victory, the Pioneers remain in a tie with Willamette
for third place in the Northwest Conference. The two teams will
play each other Saturday night, February 16, in Salem. The game
will be carried live on the internet through sportsjuice.com. The
Pioneers improve to 8-5 in the Conference and 14-7 overall. George
Fox, who plays Pacific Saturday night, falls to 8-14 (4-9 NWC).
For the Bruins, Evan Atwater led the team with 21 points.
Mark Metzler scored eight points with five rebounds.
For the Pioneers, David Berggren scored 17 points, going 5-5
from three-point range and 6-7 overall from the field. Seniors
Thomas Tillery (Portland, Ore.) and Mark Robinowitz (Portland,
Ore.) each scored in double-digits on senior night, with Tillery
putting up 11 with five rebounds. Robinowitz scored 13 with three
steals.
