The Pioneer men's basketball team finished off their road trip
with a 76-68 victory (box score) at Whitman
Saturday evening. Thomas Tillery had 17 points to lead the
Pioneers.
Lewis & Clark College erupted on a 19-2 scoring outburst
midway through the second half to rally for a 76-68 Northwest
Conference men's basketball victory over Whitman College Saturday
night in Walla Walla, Wash.
Lewis & Clark, improving to 8-4 on the season and 2-2 in the
NWC, was trailing 48-43 with 13 minutes left in the second half.
But 3-pointers by David Berggren (sophomore, Tualating, Ore.) and
Tyson Papenfuss (junior, Clackamas, Ore.) ignited a scoring run
that gave the Pioneers a 62-50 lead with just under six minutes
remaining.
Whitman's Chris Faidley, who led all scorers with 26 points,
swished a pair of three throws with 2:39 left to cut the Missionary
deficit to 70-62, but Thomas Tillery (senior, Portland, Ore.), who
led Lewis & Clark's scoring with 17 points, answered 15 seconds
later with a jumper and Whitman's comeback stalled.
Mark Robinowitz (senior, Portland, Ore.) hit for 14 points off the
Lewis & Clark bench. The Pioneers also got 10 points from
Berggren and nine points apiece from Gene Rivera (sneior, Kahului,
Hawaii) and Tyson Papenfuss. Rivera added a team-high seven
rebounds and four blocked
shots.
The Pioneers play again next Friday, January 18, when they head to
Newberg to take on the George Fox Bruins. Tip off will be at 8pm.
