Lewis & Clark College men’s basketball coach Tim McCrory announced the hiring of Shawn Carson as the team’s new assistant coach.
Carson brings a diverse background in coaching and sports management to the Pioneers. He most recently served as the men's basketball assistant coach at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon, where he helped lead the program to its first playoff appearance in 10 years during the 2021-2022 season.
“We are grateful to welcome Shawn to the staff and Lewis & Clark College,” McCrory said. “Shawn will bring experience, a commitment to developing our student-athletes, and the ability to connect with our students and staff at L&C.”
Prior to his role at Mt. Hood, Carson was a graduate assistant coach at Bushnell University in Eugene. He has also gained valuable experience as an AAU coach with Oregon Prospects in Portland, where he developed training programs and mentored younger athletes.
“I am grateful to the athletic department and Tim McCrory for allowing me to be part of the coaching staff at Lewis & Clark,” said Carson. “After graduating college, my goal was to join a university coaching staff, and I’m glad to have that opportunity in the city where I was born and raised.”
A two-year player for Bushnell, Carson averaged 6.7 points per game. He earned the Cecil Warner Most Improved Player award as a junior and was an Academic All-Cascaded Collegiate Conference selection as a senior. Carson led the team in blocks during his final campaign and finished with 53 career blocks to land sixth on the Beacon all-time list.
The Rose City native’s skills extend beyond the basketball court. Carson worked as an On-Track Coordinator at Parkrose High School, providing academic and behavioral support to students. “My coaching philosophy is built on developing players and teaching the game while ensuring they feel heard and valued,” added Carson. “I focus on building their skills and confidence on and off the court, fostering their growth as athletes and individuals.”
Carson has begun his duties to prepare the Pioneers for the upcoming season. “I am excited to work with Coach Tim and the rest of the team to help the program grow and succeed. I’m eager to learn from Coach Tim and contribute to more successful seasons here at Lewis & Clark. Roll Pios!”
