Matt Kosderka has led the turn around of the Lewis & Clark baseball program over the past eight seasons. He took over the program in 2018 after a 22nd-consecutive losing season. In year five of the project (2023), Lewis & Clark recorded their first winning season since 1995 and the team took a step further in 2024 when they tied the program record for overall (31) and conference wins (14) and earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in school history. The Pioneers posted their third season of 20 wins or more in four years in 2025, marking the best four-year run for the program since 1987-90.

Lewis & Clark went 20-19 during the 2025 season and went into the final weekend of play still in contention for a spot in the four-team Northwest Conference Tournament. The Pioneers earned at least one win against every conference opponent, including earning a three-game road sweep of George Fox University. Lewis & Clark showed off their mettle in a three-game road series against #22/23 Pomona-Pitzer College. After being walked-off in the second game in the bottom of the ninth, the Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the ninth of game three, to earn a 5-4 win and their first victory over a ranked team since the 2023 NCAA Tournament. At the end of the season, three players earned All-Region accolades and the program set a record with nine All-Conference honorees.

The 2024 season saw a young and injured team take a step back in the standings while integrating 13 freshman on to the roster. Despite finishing 17-22-1, the season had several bright spots. The Pioneers finished 12-10 on their brand-new turf field, Jerry Gatto Field, and Kosderka claimed his 100th career victory on April 20 in a 6-5 win over Whitworth. Senior ace Brett Pierson set the program record for career strikeouts (214) in the same 6-5 win over Whitworth on April 20. Lewis & Clark dominated College World Series team Pomona-Pitzer 10-2 in a early non-conference game in California and the team earned series victories over Linfield, Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound and Whitworth. At the end of the season, five players were named to the NWC All-Conference team, including the first-ever honors for Pierson and freshman starter Owen Eisen

Lewis & Clark enjoyed one of, if not, their best season in program history in 2023. The Pioneers opened the season by winning seven of their first eight series and clinched their first-ever trip to the Northwest Conference Tournament on the second-to-last day of the regular season. With a win on Senior Day, baseball finished second in the NWC Standings (15-9) - their highest finish in league play since 1992. In the NWC Tournament, Lewis & Clark defeated #3 Willamette 10-4 to earn their first-ever NWC Tournament win, before suffering a 9-3 loss to #1 seed and host Pacific University. The Pioneers roared back to defeat #4 Whitman 6-5 and then swept #1 Pacific in the NWC Championship Series 6-4 and 10-7 to win their first-ever NWC Tournament Title. Lewis & Clark was sent to Birmingham, Alabama for their first-ever NCAA DIII Regional. The Pioneers defeated #1 seed and host Birmingham-Southern College 7-1 to claim their first-ever NWC win and first win over a nationally-ranked team since April 2008 (BSC was ranked #7/5). The Pioneers saw their season come to an end the next day but still finished tied for first in program history in overall (31) and conference wins (14). Seven players were named to the NWC All-Conference Team including NWC Player of the Year Jack Thomson and Kosderka who was named NWC Coach of the Year. Three players would earn All-Region honors and Thomson was named an All-American and the D3baseball.com Position Player of the Year. The Pioneers added two All-Region Gold Glover awards and sophomore center fielder Brennen Davis was named to the National Gold Glove Team.

The Pioneers posted their first winning season this century (20-17) in 2022 as they just barely missed earning a spot in the NWC Tournament. Behind Thomson, who earned his first-ever NWC Position Player of the Year award, Lewis & Clark posted series wins over Caltech, Whitman, George Fox, Pacific Lutheran and Redlands. The Pioneers earned their 20th win on April 15 over Whitworth (6-4) to become the first team since 1995 to reach the milestone. Thomson led three players on the NWC All-Conference Team and became the third player in program history to earn Player of the Year award honors from the NWC. He went on to be named the Regional Position Player of the Year and earned All-American honors from both the American Baseball Coaches' Association (ABCA) and D3baseball.com.

The Pioneers finished with their best position in the Northwest Conference standings since 2010 with Kosderka at the helm in 2019. At the end of the season, Matt Donovan was named All-Northwest Conference First Team, the Pioneers' first pick to the top team since Jordan Wlodarczyk was named to the All-NWC First Team in 2009. The Pioneers' four all-NWC selections (Donovan, Jack Thomson, Andrew Yarak, Jacob Serafini) in 2019 tied Lewis & Clark's most All-NWC selections since 2009, in which five Pioneers were selected all-conference. Lewis & Clark took the series from Linfield for the second straight season and won its final game of the year, 3-2 against Whitman. The Pios also had a three-game win streak in early March.

In his first season leading the program, the Pioneers were named the ChamPIOns Team of the Year at the 2018 ELCYS (Excellence in Lewis & Clark's Year in Sports) awards. To earn the award, a team must display exemplary character and sportsmanship in competition, in the classroom, on campus and in our community. Academically, Lewis & Clark was the only Northwest Conference program and one of 80 teams nationwide to receive the American Baseball Coaches Association's Team Academic Excellence Award in 2018. During the spring season, the Pioneers defeated Linfield, the NWC runner-up, in a series for the first time in at least a decade. Statistically, the Pios were second in the NWC in stolen bases per game and earned two All-NWC selections in Sean Shepherd (first team) and Matt Donovan (second team). Donovan's 17 doubles led the conference and set a new school record for a single season.

Kosderka pitched for Willamette from 1995-98 and was selected NAIA First-Team All-America and NWC Player of the Year as a senior, after which he was drafted by the Texas Rangers. As of the date of his hire at Lewis & Clark, the Willamette Athletic Hall of Famer held Willamette career records with 30 wins and 350 1/3 innings pitched, ranked second all-time at the school in career appearances, complete games, starts and strikeouts and held the single-season records for strikeouts and innings pitched.
