FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Lewis & Clark College volleyball battled through three competitive sets but came up short Friday night, falling 3-0 to Pacific University at the Stoller Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Juniors
Isabel Meleán-Williams and
Ruby Kuerschner led the Pioneers with eight kills apiece. Meleán-Williams hit a team-best .353 (8-2-17) and added five digs, two service aces and a block. Kuerschner just missed a triple-double, pacing Lewis & Clark with 14 assists and nine digs to go along with her career-high kill total.
Junior
Kaitlyn Jensen posted five kills and tied Kuerschner with a team-high nine digs.
The Pioneers stayed within striking distance throughout the night, challenging the Boxers in all three sets.
In the opener, Lewis & Clark pulled ahead early, taking a 7-4 lead after Kuerschner's first kill off a feed from first-year setter
Abbi Sanchez (two assists). The Pioneers built their largest advantage at 18-12, when Meleán-Williams and junior
HB Schuett (three kills) combined for a block. Pacific responded with a 7-1 run to erase the deficit. A kill by Jensen, a Boxers attack error and a Schuett ace put the Pioneers back up 22-19. Pacific rallied again, tying the set at 22-all and claiming three of the final four points for a 25-23 win.
Riding the momentum, Pacific opened the second set with a 7-2 lead. Meleán-Williams served an ace and Kuerschner added a kill to cut the margin to 7-6, forcing a Pacific timeout. Schuett notched a kill to make it 11-10, but the Boxers answered with a run to push ahead 22-15. Lewis & Clark staved off four set points to pull within 24-21, but Pacific closed it out, 25-21.
The third set was tight early, with a solo block by junior
Christi San Diego (four kills) and a Meleán-Williams kill knotting it at 4-all. Pacific steadily pulled away to lead 16-10. A kill by San Diego and a service ace from junior
Kenzie Edwards (eight assists) capped a rally that cut the deficit to 21-18. Kuerschner and Meleán-Williams added kills to trim the gap to 23-21, but Pacific secured two of the final three points for a 25-22 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Senior Reilyn Sabado and first-year Ariah Potts joined Meleán-Williams with five digs each in the match.
- The Pioneers recorded more kills (31-30), more assists (30-26) and more digs (44-36) over an opponent for the first time this season.
- Senior Abigail Warrick chipped in two kills against the Boxers.
