TACOMA, Wash.—Host University of Puget Sound scored a goal in the ninth minute of each half to earn a 2-0 win over Lewis & Clark College men's soccer in both team's Northwest Conference openers on Saturday afternoon.

Alex Haugaard and Vinney Self each scored their first goals of the season for the hosts. Haugaard made it 1-0 at 8:18 and Self scored 8:11 into the second half to provide a key insurance tally.Â

The Pioneers proved competitive out of the gate and earned a corner kick just 4:07 into the game.Â

Puget Sound would counter with the first shot of the contest and made it 1-0 on their second effort. After their initial free kick was cleared out to midfield, the Loggers kept the pressure on and a through ball found Haugaard inside the box and he blasted a right-footed shot inside the far post.Â

Weinstein would try to immediately tie the game, but his high shot was snagged by Loggers keeper Luke Mamiya in the 10
th minute.Â

The Loggers would continue to press their advantage and would record the next four shots of the game to push their lead to 6-1 in shots.Â

The momentum of the game swung in the 32
nd minute, when both teams had a player sent off for a direct red card at 31:12.Â

Lewis & Clark would limit the hosts to just three shots over the final 58:48.Â

Schwartz nearly tied the game 1-1 in the 51
st minute. He received a cross that was just behind him, Schwartz managed to angle his body so that he got a foot on it but his looping shot went just over the bar.Â

Puget Sound managed to add an insurance goal at 53:11 to put the game out of reach. The Loggers forced a turnover in their own defensive half and quickly pushed the ball forward. Self made a run on the near side and received a pass just outside the 18-yard box. He took two dribbles before lacing a left-footed shot inside the far post.Â
