LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Lewis & Clark College baseball scored early and often, putting up three runs in four different innings en route to a 13-3, seven-inning victory over Occidental College on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore Michael Aikawa, junior Joaquin Sandoval and senior Brennen Davis each hit a three-run home run to lead the Pioneers. All three finished with one hit and three RBI, while Aikawa and Davis each scored twice after drawing walks from Occidental pitchers.
Seniors Will Heron and Justin Cavagnaro drove in the remaining runs. Heron went 3 for 4 with three RBI, two runs scored, a sacrifice fly and a stolen base. Cavagnaro added one hit, one RBI, a walk and a run scored.
The Pioneers' pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts and held Occidental to just three runs. Sophomore Owen Eisen earned the win, allowing one run on six hits while striking out four over five innings. First-year Dillon Foster and sophomore Shane Buchbinder closed out the game in relief, each striking out two. Buchbinder struck out the final two batters swinging.
Lewis & Clark got off to a fast start in the first inning when junior Brandon Gonzaga and sophomore Gavin Mangano were both hit by pitches. Aikawa followed with a three-run homer to left field, giving the Pioneers a 3-0 lead.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the third when Heron drove in Gonzaga with a sacrifice fly. Occidental got one run back in the bottom half on an RBI double to make it 4-1.
In the fifth, Heron singled with one out and Davis drew a walk to set the stage for Sandoval, who launched his sixth bomb of the season over the center-field fence to make it 7-1.
In the sixth, Cavagnaro and Heron each singled with two outs before Davis blasted his fifth home run of the season over the left-field fence, extending the lead to 10-1.
Occidental added two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Pioneers responded in the seventh. With two outs, Gonzaga walked, Mangano was hit by a pitch and Aikawa walked to load the bases. After a pitching change, Cavagnaro walked to force in a run, and Heron followed with a two-run single to center, putting the game out of reach at 13-3.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Mangano was hit by a pitch three times, and Gonzaga was pegged twice, as the Tigers nailed the Pioneers seven times in the game.
- Davis and Sandoval each recorded their second three-RBI game of the season. Heron and Aikawa each posted their first. Sandoval leads the team with seven multi-RBI games, followed by Davis and Heron with six each, and Aikawa with five.
- Lewis & Clark has won four straight games against Occidental. Only one of those contests went the full nine innings; two of three games in 2023 were called early due to darkness.
- Aikawa has reached base safely in 12 consecutive games, surpassing Davis's season-high streak of 11 with his first-inning home run.
