Baseball’s Comeback Bid Stalls Against Bearcats

Nine Pioneers recorded a hit in loss.

KEIZER, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College baseball mounted a late rally but came up just short in a 5-4 Northwest Conference loss to Willamette University on Saturday afternoon at Volcanoes Stadium.

THE BASICS

Willamette 5, Lewis & Clark 4
(Lewis & Clark 19-17, 10-11 NWC)
(Willamette 13-21, 10-11 NWC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior Luke Ritter got the start for the Pioneers, tossing four innings and allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Junior Nate Kerr came on in relief, pitching the final four innings and giving up two runs on five hits.

Lewis & Clark spread out the offense, with nine different players recording a hit in the rubber match. Senior Brennen Davis led the way, hitting a home run and finishing with two RBI and a run scored. Sophomores Michael Aikawa and Connor Broschard each doubled, with Aikawa adding an RBI, and junior Brandon Gonzaga delivered a ninth-inning RBI single.

After Willamette jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run homer, the game remained quiet until the fifth. That's when Davis launched his ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field that tied the game at 2-2 and scored senior Will Heron.

The Bearcats answered back in the bottom half with an RBI single to reclaim a 3-2 lead.

Lewis & Clark continued to battle, tying the game again in the sixth. Aikawa doubled to left-center field to drive in junior Joaquin Sandoval, tying the score at 3-all.

The game stayed deadlocked until the eighth, when Willamette pulled ahead with an RBI single and a run scored on a balk to take a 5-3 advantage.

The Pioneers mounted a two out rally in the ninth, when pinch-hitter Broschard doubled down the left-field line, and pinch-runner Gavin Mangano scored on Gonzaga's single to left to make it a one-run game. However, the Bearcats closed out the win when Sandoval popped out to second base.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Davis scored his 137th career run to move into 4th place in program history.
  • Aikawa's RBI double in the sixth inning was his 12th double of the season, tying him for second in the NWC, one behind teammate, senior Justin Cavagnaro.
  • The Pioneers are now 4-4 in one run games on the season.
