HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Nine Pioneers pitchers combined to strike out 10 and allow zero earned runs, as Lewis & Clark matched their longest winning streak of the season with their fourth-straight victory.Ā
Ā
Junior
Brandon Gonzaga led the Pioneers offensively. He finished 4-6, with two runs scored, an RBI, a double and a career-high four stolen bases.Ā
Ā
First year
Will Michelman added two hits, two runs and two RBI in four at-bats. Sophomore
Connor Broschard came on as a pinch hitter and finished 1-1 with two runs, an RBI and a walk.Ā
Ā
The Pioneers dominated the Knights who are in their first season of varsity competition after a 30-year hiatus.
Shane Buchbinder,
Sam Burchi,
Matt Stanislavsky,
Felix Gibeault,
Ryan Harvey,
Connor Broschard and
Nate Kerr all threw scoreless innings. Burchi earned his first collegiate win after striking out two in a scoreless second inning. Stanislavsky (three) and Kerr (two) each recorded multiple strikeouts.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark struggled to put Warner Pacific away in a game that was a pitcher's duel for the first six innings.Ā
Ā
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. With two down,
Eli Steinhaus doubled to left center and Gonzaga followed with an RBI double off the left-field foul line for a 1-0 advantage.Ā
Ā
Warner Pacific threatened to tie the game in the next half inning. The Knights put the first two baserunners on against Stanislavsky, before the first year recorded back-to-back strikeouts. After a walk loaded the bases, Stanislavsky posted his third strikeout of the inning.Ā
Ā
The Pioneers added to their lead in the sixth.
Bret Potter walked with two outs and stole second base to put himself in scoring position.
Evyn Lewis roped a double to left-center to score Potter and make it 2-0.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh. They scored four runs on just two hits thanks to a patient approach at the plate and a costly Knights error. Gonzaga opened the frame with a single and
Joaquin Sandoval followed with a walk. The pair executed a double steal and Michelman came through with a two-run single to left-center to push the Pioneers advantage to 4-0. The hosts would load the bases on walks to Broschard and
Gavin Mangano. Two more runs came in to score when Warner Pacific misplayed a pop up on the infield with two outs.Ā
Ā
Warner Pacific scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 6-2.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark answered with five runs in the eighth. Gonzaga started the rally with a single and
Jacob Shannon-Wilkerson walked to put two runners on. Sandoval plated Gonzaga with an RBI single through the left side to make it 7-2. Lewis & Clark used a double steal to make it 8-2 as Shannon-Wilkerson stole home after Sandoval induced a throw down to second. Broschard added an RBI single to right to score Sandoval and Michelman raced home on a wild pitch. The Pioneers capped off the scoring on an
Eli Steinhaus bases-loaded walk that plated Broschard.Ā
