Softball Sweeps Willamette In 2025 NWC Opening Doubleheader

Sophomore Harper Campanella hit a pair of two-run home runs

SALEM, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College softball posted eight multi-run innings in their final 10 at-bats of the day, to earn a doubleheader sweep of host Willamette University in their 2025 Northwest Conference opener.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 7, Willamette 4
Lewis & Clark 14, Willamette 6 (5 Innings)
(Lewis & Clark 4-0, NWC 2-0)
(Willamette 3-3, NWC 0-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

In a matchup of two of the four NWC Tournament teams from a year ago, Lewis & Clark swept the Bearcats on NWC Opening Day for a second-straight season. In the first game, Willamette took a 4-3 lead in the third, only for the Pioneers to score the final four runs of the contest. Lewis & Clark would never trail in game two as they scored two or more runs in all five innings to earn the mercy-rule win.

Sophomore Harper Campanella hit a pair of two-run homers and finished the day 4-8 with two runs and four RBI to lead the Pioneers offensively.

GAME ONE RECAP

After falling behind for the first time this season, Lewis & Clark scored two runs in the top of the fourth to quickly regain the lead and added two insurance runs in the seventh to earn a 7-4 win.

Campanella and fellow sophomore Makena Dahir led the offensive attack in game one. Campanella went 3-4 with a run, two RBI and a homer. Dahir added two hits, a run scored, a double and two RBI. Senior Sam Gildersleeve was the final Pioneer with multiple hits as she finished the game 2-4 with a run. Juniors Gina Ozuna and Emily Patton each tacked on one hit, one run and one RBI in the win.

In the circle, sophomore Maggie O'Leary overcame a four-run bottom of the third inning to move to 3-0 on the year. O'Leary scatted seven hits, three walks and four runs and struck out five Willamette batters.

Lewis & Clark opened the scoring with a three-run third. Junior Cami Restagno led off the frame with a single but was erased on a fielder's choice. With two down and Ozuna on first, the second baseman stole second and raced home on a Patton RBI single. Campanella followed with a two-run homer to make it 3-0.

Willamette answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. Seven straight Bearcats batters reached on five hits, a walk and a hit by pitch. Sophomore Desirae Hatfield came through with the big hit as she recorded a two-run double to give the hosts the lead.

Lewis & Clark immediately responded. Dahir doubled to center and took third on a wild pitch. She was able to walk home on an RBI double down the left-field line from junior McKenna Zehnder. With two down and Zehnder still at second, the Pioneers took the lead on an infield RBI single from Ozuna.

O'Leary would settle in and allow just two baserunners over the next three innings.

The Pioneers tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. With two down and first year Kayla Roman and Gildersleeve in scoring position, both runners came in when the Bearcats third baseman committed an error on a Dahir grounder.

Willamette brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but O'Leary induced a fly out to left to seal the win.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Pioneers racked up 13 hits and 14 runs in just five innings and scored multiple runs in every inning, to earn a 14-6 (five-inning) win over the hosts.

Junior Madison Scroggins, senior Caeleigh Rosenbach, Ozuna and Campanella all drove in multiple runs for Lewis & Clark. Scroggins made her 2025 season debut off the bench and went 2-2 with three RBI and a double. Rosenbach also came off the bench to have a big game. The senior catcher went 2-2 with a run scored, two RBI and a double in the best game of her collegiate career to date. Ozuna added two hits in three at-bats, two runs and two RBI. Campanella hit her second two-run homer in as many games.

Junior pitcher Charlize Pope picked up her first win of the 2025 season. She allowed 12 hits and six runs and struck out a season-high five batters.

Lewis & Clark jumped all over the Bearcats by scoring the first nine runs of the game.

In the first inning, Ozuna reached on an infield single and Campanella homered with one down to make it 2-0.

The Pioneers added three runs in the second. Dahir led off the frame with her first homer of the year. Zehnder followed with a single and she scored on a two-out RBI single from Ozuna. Patton made it 5-0 with an RBI single through the right side.

Lewis & Clark registered their most runs of the day in the third with four crossing the plate. Gildersleeve and senior Mari Alvarez led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Dahir walked to load the bases and Zehnder made it 6-0 with a bases-loaded walk to plate Gildersleeve. Senior Pippi Jepsen, who pinch ran for Alvarez, scampered home on a wild pitch to make it 7-0. In her first at-bat of the year, Scroggins came through with a two-run double down the left-field line to score Zehnder and Dahir.

Willamette would strike for three runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, but Lewis & Clark would have plenty of firepower to gain their big lead back.

The Pioneers matched Willamette's first three-spot with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Abby Yamashita came on to pinch-hit and recorded a sacrifice fly to score Alvarez. Scroggins followed with an infield RBI single to plate junior Lola Jarrette. Rosenbach added the team's 12th run when she scored on a Willamette error.

Lewis & Clark reestablished their eight-run lead in the top of the fifth. With two down and no one on, Alvarez walked and Jarrette singled through the left side. Rosenbach followed with a two-run double to left-center to make it 14-6.

Willamette put two runners in scoring position with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but Pope recorded a pop up and a strikeout to end the game.
