PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College baseball dominated the opener with a 10-0 shutout victory before falling 18-6 in the second game against the University of Puget Sound on Sunday at
Jerry Gatto Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pioneers won the Northwest Conference series, 2-1, and split the four-game overall series with Puget Sound. Senior
Will Heron powered the offense with four home runs and 10 RBI across both games, hitting .667 (6-for-9) on the day. Sophomore
Bret Potter went 4-for-6 (.667) with three doubles and one RBI.
Junior
Joaquin Sandoval added three hits, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. Senior
Brennen Davis finished with two hits, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore
Michael Aikawa scored four runs on one hit—a double—along with three walks and a hit-by-pitch.
GAME ONE RECAP
Sophomore
Owen Eisen delivered a dominant start, throwing six shutout innings while allowing five hits and striking out six to earn his first win of the season. The Pioneers backed him with 13 hits, including four home runs.
Lewis & Clark struck early when Heron singled up the middle to drive in Aikawa, who had reached on an error. The RBI was Heron's 100th career, making him the 11th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Puget Sound threatened in the second inning, loading the bases with no outs. Eisen responded with back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to escape unscathed.
The Pioneers extended their lead in the third when Heron and Davis launched back-to-back home runs to left field on consecutive pitches, pushing the lead to 3-0.
In the fourth, Lewis & Clark added two more runs. After junior
Brandon Gonzaga reached on an error and stole second and third, Sandoval drove him in with a single to left. Heron then plated Sandoval on a fielder's choice to make it 5-0.
In the fifth, Sandoval singled home first-year
Will Michelman, who had walked to lead off the inning, extending the margin to 6-0.
Heron crushed his second home run of the game in the sixth, a solo shot to left that made it 7-0.
First-year
Dillon Foster pitched the top of the seventh, striking out one and allowing a hit.
Lewis & Clark capped the scoring with three runs in the seventh. Sandoval led off with a home run over the right-center field fence. Heron drove in Aikawa with a groundout, and Davis singled home senior
Justin Cavagnaro to seal the 10-0 mercy-rule victory.
GAME TWO RECAP
Foster started Game 2 for the Pioneers, allowing one run on three hits with one strikeout in two innings.
Puget Sound opened the scoring in the second when Aidan Sullivan doubled and later scored on Jonah Velasco's sacrifice fly.
Lewis & Clark answered in the bottom half. Davis walked, and sophomore
Dylan Lee singled before Potter doubled to right-center, scoring Davis and tying the game at 1-1.
After a scoreless third and fourth, the Pioneers broke through in the fifth. Sandoval walked, and Aikawa was hit by a pitch, setting up Heron's three-run homer to left that gave Lewis & Clark a 4-1 lead.
The Loggers responded with a massive rally in the sixth, sending 23 batters to the plate and scoring 17 runs on six hits, 11 walks and five hit batters. Lucas Brennan highlighted the inning with a two-run homer and a three-run double, giving Puget Sound an 18-4 lead.
In their final at-bat, Aikawa doubled and Heron followed with his second home run of the game—a two-run shot to center—to make it 18-6.
Heron finished 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI. Aikawa went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Potter added an RBI double and drew a walk in three plate appearances.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Game 1 shutout was the Pioneers' second this week, following a four-year drought without one.
- Heron ranks eighth in program history with 108 career RBI and is tied for ninth with 10 home runs in a single season.
- The top of the sixth inning in Game 2 lasted 55 minutes.
- Heron is tied for the NWC lead in home runs (10), tied for second in runs scored (24) and ranks fourth in RBI (27).
- The four home runs in Game 1 are tied for the second-most in a single game this season in the NWC. Lewis & Clark also tied the conference single-game high with five home runs at Whittier on Feb. 16.
