PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College softball one-hit Warner Pacific University in game one and senior Sam Gildersleeve set the program record for career runs in game two, to help Lewis & Clark earn a sweep in their 2025 home opener.

THE BASICS

Lewis & Clark 11, Warner Pacific 1 (5 Innings)
Lewis & Clark 9, Warner Pacific 2
(Lewis & Clark 8-0)
(Warner Pacific 2-14)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After having to wait nearly a month for their home opener, Lewis & Clark outscored the Knights by 17 runs (20-3) to move to 8-0 on the season.

Gildersleeve set the program record for career runs scored with four runs on Tuesday. She set the record in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two. She hit her 37th career home run, a program record she already held, to score her 101st career run. Graduate student Mari Alvarez tied the program record for hits one batter later, with a soft flare into right field for her 155th career hit.

In the circle, junior Maggie O'Leary dominated Warner Pacific to go to 2-0 on the day. She threw three innings in both games and struck out 12, while giving two hits and one unearned run.

GAME ONE RECAP

Lewis & Clark scored 11 runs in their first three at-bats and held the visitors to one bunt single to earn an 11-1 mercy-rule victory.

Sophomore Makena Dahir continued her red-hot start to the season. She went 3-3 with three runs and three RBI. She blasted a double and a three-run homer on the first two pitches she saw and added a hard-hit single in her final at-bat.

Gildersleeve added two hits, two RBI and a run scored in three trips to the plate. Junior Lola Jarrette finished 2-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a double and junior Emily Patton tacked on two hits in two at-bats, an RBI and a walk. Junior Gina Ozuna went 0-1 with two walks and tied for the team lead with three runs scored.

In the circle, O'Leary and sophomore Ryan Jurischk held Warner Pacific to four baserunners in five innings. O'Leary struck out six and gave up a bunt single and an unearned run in three innings. Jurischk came on for the final two frames and walked two and struck out one.

The Pioneers scored three runs in the bottom of the first on just two hits. Ozuna walked, Dahir doubled and Harper Campanella walked to load the bases. With one out, Ozuna raced home on a wild pitch and Dahir followed her after the catcher threw the ball away. With two outs, Patton flared a single to plate Campanella and made it 3-0.

Lewis & Clark tripled their lead in the second. Jarrette opened the frame with a single and raced to third on a McKenna Zehner double. Madison Scroggins made it 4-0 when she put down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Jarrette. Ozuna reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners and Dahir followed with a long home run to left to make it 7-0. The Pioneers added two runs with two outs. Gildersleeve reached on an infield single, stole second and raced home on an Alvarez single. After a Patton walk, Jarrette doubled to center to score Alvarez from second.

Lewis & Clark tacked on two final runs in the third. With one out, Ozuna walked and Dahir singled to put runners at the corners. Gildersleeve brought both runners home with a two-run single up the middle to make it 11-1.

GAME TWO RECAP

Lewis & Clark used a five-run bottom of the first to take the lead and tacked on four runs in their final two at-bats to dispatch the Knights 9-2.

Junior Cami Restagno, Gildersleeve and Alvarez all finished with three hits in the game. After not playing in game one, Restagno went 3-3 with a double and two RBI. Gildersleeve finished 3-4 with three runs, two RBI, a double and a home run. Alvarez tacked on three hits, a run scored, a double and two RBI.

Junior Charlize Pope, O'Leary and Jurischk combined to limit Warner Pacific to six singles. Pope went the opening three innings and scattered three hits, two walks and two runs. O'Leary came on for the next three innings and struck out six, while allowing one hit. Jurischk pitched the final inning and gave up three baserunners (two hits and one walk), before closing out the game.

The Pioneers used a five-run bottom of the first inning to take a 5-1 lead and never looked back. With one out, Dahir singled to left field and raced home on a Campanella double to right-center. Campanella traded places with Gildersleeve after the senior deposited an RBI double of her own to almost the same spot in right-center. Alvarez made it 3-1 with an RBI single that scored Gildersleeve. With two outs and two on, Restagno doubled just over the diving third baseman to score Alvarez and Patton to make it 5-1.

The Knights cut the deficit to 5-2 in the third and starting pitcher Briana Munoz appeared to be in a groove.

Lewis & Clark broke out of a mini-offensive slump with three runs in the fifth. Campanella opened the inning with a single and Gildersleeve added a single of her own to put two on. Alvarez blasted an RBI double off the paint on the left-field line to make it 6-2. Gildersleeve scored after a Knights error and pinch runner Lacey Marglin scored on a Restagno bunt single.

Gildersleeve and Alvarez made history in the bottom of the sixth. Gildersleeve roped a homer over the left-field fence for her 101st career run. Alvarez followed with a flare into shallow right field for her record-tying 155thcareer hit.
