Women’s Tennis Splits Saturday Matches in Texas

Eight Pioneers earn wins in Saturday afternoon match.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Lewis & Clark College women's tennis earned a split on the second day of their Texas road trip, falling to #14 Trinity University 7-0 in the morning, before bouncing back for a 5-2 victory over Schreiner University on Saturday afternoon to earn their first win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Pioneers opened the day against nationally ranked Trinity, facing two nationally ranked players. In the afternoon match against Schreiner, Lewis & Clark found its rhythm early. The Pioneers dominated doubles play, sweeping all three matches to set the tone for their first victory of the season.
 
LEWIS & CLARK vs. #14 TRINITY RECAP

Trinity swept the doubles matches to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead into singles. The Tigers' top duo, Rosabella Andrade and Trinity Levy, defeated junior Susanna Anand and senior Kacie Lau 6-2 at first doubles. In the second doubles match Olivia Kim and Ellie Hughes posted a 6-0 victory over sophomore Maya Curry and first-year Taylor Stadjuhar. Brooke Belitz and Lucy Nabedrick completed Trinity's sweep with a 6-1 win over senior Hayley Kreps and sophomore Charlotte Makoni in the third doubles match.

The Tigers continued their strong play in singles, securing straight-set victories in all six matches. Kim defeated #32 Anand 6-1, 6-1 in the top singles match, while #48 Hughes secured a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Curry in the second.

Makoni faced #27 Levy in the third doubles match, falling 6-0, 6-1, and Stradjuhar dropped number four singles to Nabedrick 6-1, 6-1.

Kreps and Lau fell in the final two matches of the morning. Andrade defeated Kreps 6-0, 6-1 at number five, and Vo completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lau at number six.

LEWIS & CLARK vs. SCHREINER RECAP

Lewis & Clark rebounded against Schreiner, starting with a doubles sweep. The number one duo of Anand and Lau controlled their match against Hannah Reyna and Addyson Grunberg, winning 6-2, while Curry and Stadjuhar delivered a commanding 6-0 victory in the second doubles. Kreps and Makoni secured a 6-2 victory over Daniella Rodriquez and Ally Leonard in the third flight and the Pioneers secured their first doubles point of the year.

Makoni carried her momentum into singles play, securing a commanding victory at first singles over Reyna, 6-3, 1-0 (ret.). After Schreiner earned a point at second singles, Kreps extended the Pioneers' lead with a straight-set win over Rodriquez, 6-1, 6-4, at the third position.

First-year Anna English added another point for Lewis & Clark defeating Grunberg 6-1, 6-4 in the fourth flight. Following a hard-fought Schreiner victory at number five singles, where Bergeron outlasted senior Soraya Young-Pen in a third-set tiebreaker.

Senior Lauren Smith-Euben sealed the team victory with an emphatic 6-1, 6-0 win over Leonard in the sixth singles match.

BY THE NUMBERS 
  • English earned her first career dual win in her first collegiate dual.
  • Makoni went 2-2 on Saturday, played her first nationally ranked opponent and earned her first career win at first singles.
  • The Pioneers women's team earned their first win in Texas since defeating Southwestern 9-0 on March 29, 2013.
