Men's Tennis Sweeps Concordia Texas, Improves to 3-1

Pioneers win all six singles matches in dominant performance.

AUSTIN, Texas —Lewis & Clark College men's tennis earned a commanding 7-0 victory over Concordia University Texas in non-conference action at the Austin Tennis Academy on Sunday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers dominated singles play, winning all six matches in straight sets, highlighted by sophomore Noah Sutin's 6-1, 6-3 victory over nationally ranked #25 Steven Scholz at first singles.

Lewis & Clark set the tone early by securing the doubles point, winning two of three matches. In first doubles, juniors Wade McDermott and Kai Wills defeated Adrian Munguia and Vincent Risoldi 6-4. Concordia's Daniel Beckles and Hunter Green claimed their team's lone win of the day at third doubles, edging senior Bennett Gazor and first-year Arnav Bishnoi 7-5. Sophomore Joey Lyon and Sutin clinched the doubles point with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-1) victory over Scholz and Jake Riggs at second doubles.

McDermott extended the Pioneers' lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Aaron Griffin at fourth singles. Sutin followed with his victory over Scholz, and Lyon secured the dual win with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 performance against Beckles at second singles.

Senior Matt Chio controlled his match in third singles, defeating Risoldi 6-3, 6-4. Wills maintained the momentum at fifth singles with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Green, while Bishnoi completed the sweep at sixth singles, topping Ethan Garcia 6-2, 6-3.

  • McDermott went 4-0 in singles play and earned six total wins during the Texas trip.
  • The Pioneers finished 17-7 in singles matches, with every player who competed in a countable match earning at least one win and a .500 or better record.
  • Sutin's victory over Scholz marked his first career win against a nationally ranked opponent.

The Pioneers return to Portland for a scrimmage against NCAA Division I Portland State University on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
