Heien Punches Ticket To Nationals, to Lead Women's Cross Country At Regionals

Malia Heien is only the fifth runner in school history to qualify for three National XC Championship Meets

CLAREMONT, Calif.—Senior Malia Heien became only the fifth runners in school history to earn a third trip to Cross Country Nationals on Saturday, as she finished 11th overall to punch her ticket to South Carolina next Saturday.

THE BASICS

Women's Cross Country – 14th Place – 380 Points

HOW IT HAPPENED

Heien earned her fourth-straight All-Region finish to lead women's cross country to a 14th-place showing.

The senior, who placed 10th at the Northwest Conference Championship two weeks ago in similar sloppy conditions, used a strong surge to finish in 11th place.

She sat 35th after 1K and 24th after 1.3 miles. Heien moved up to 16th after 2.1 miles and 12th overall at the 2.7 mile mark. She would briefly drop to 13th at the 3.5 mile mark and would cross the finish line in 11th place. She posted a final time of 22:28.2.

Junior Skylar Willow finished second on the team for a second-straight meet. Willow followed a similar script to Heien. She sat 124th at the first checkpoint but cracked the top-100 after 2.1 miles and crossed the finish line in 87th place. Willow finished the race in 24:47.9.

Senior Miriam Reside took 96th overall. Reside was in 125th place at the first marker but picked off 20 runners by the second checkpoint and would bounce between 94th and 98th the rest of the way. Reside notched a final time of 25:16.5.

Sophomore Talia Tomhave placed fourth on the Pioneers. Tomhave ranked 123rd at the first checkpoint and moved up to 101st after 2.7 miles. She registered a final time of 25:23.5 to place 101st.

Junior Nadia Cota finished fifth on the team and 119th overall in her first Regional race since 2023. The junior sat 133rd after the first 1.3 miles, but would move up inside the top-125 and eventually finished in 25:57.6.

Sophomore Maeva Conroy made her Regionals debut on Saturday. She placed 124th overall. Conroy was sitting in 134th place at the checkpoint but moved up over the next four markers to finish in 124th place with a time of 26:12.5.

Senior Emogene Lutz took 131st place. Lutz sat 147th at the first checkpoint but would move up at each marker. She crossed the line in 26:43.4 to take 131st

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Heien ran the fastest time of her season by 5.2 seconds and her fastest time since setting a PR at last year's NCAA DIII West Regional Championship Meet.
