st minute to knot Lewis & Clark College men's soccer and Northwest University (Wash.) at 1-1, before the Eagles added two late goals to earn a 3-1 win on Saturday at Griswold Stadium.
THE BASICS
Northwest 3, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 0-4)
(Northwest 2-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Schwartz scored his first goal of the season, and the first goal by the team in a countable contest this year, as part of a strong start to the second half by the Pioneers. Sophomore
Dylan Weinstein won a tackle near midfield and slid the ball over to Schwartz, who took one touch, picked his head up and then lofted a shot from 40-yards out that looped over the keeper who was off his line and into the side netting.
The visitors responded with goals in the 63
rd and 82
nd minute to regain control of the contest and earn their second-straight win over a Northwest Conference foe.
Junior
Ben Tallent and sophomore
Micaiah Garan split the goalkeeping duties for Lewis & Clark on Saturday. Tallent made two saves on three shots in the first half, before Garan posted three stops on five shots in the second stanza.
Schwartz led the Pioneers with two shots and one of the team's three shots on target. Junior
Aashir Walson and Weinstein also added shots on target and
Zidane Indarta,
Sam London and
Emmet McDonough each recorded one shot.
Northwest came out on the front foot in the first half and took the lead in the 22
nd minute when Elliot Misic scored off a feed from Samuel Brendle.
The Pioneers found their footing as the half went along and came out much stronger to start the second stanza.
Weinstein nearly made it 1-1 in the 57
th minute when he looked up in the midfield and saw Northwest goalie Michael Kot off his line. Weinstein looped a high arching shot that Kot raced back to his goal line and was able to knock over the goal line for a corner kick.
Schwartz and the Pioneers obviously saw their opportunity to capitalize and he scored less than five minutes later off of Weinstein's feed.
The visitors retook the lead just over two minutes later, when a cross found Matthew Ludlow at the back post and he sent a shot across the face of the goal mouth for a 2-1 lead.
Lewis & Clark continued to pressure but it would be Northwest that would find the next goal. The Eagles scored off a free kick in the 82
nd minute when Angel Ventura headed down the free kick and Joao Fonseca pushed the ball over the line for a 3-1 lead.
