Wildcats End Baseball’s Five-Game Winning Streak

Pioneers conclude 15-game homestand with 8-7 record.

PORTLAND, Ore.
 – Lewis & Clark College baseball was locked into an early-inning pitcher's duel on Sunday afternoon before Linfield University avoided the Northwest Conference sweep and used big innings to earn a 13-2 win at Jerry Gatto Field.

THE BASICS

Linfield 13, Lewis & Clark 2
(Lewis & Clark 10-9-1, 2-4 NWC)
(Linfield 8-11, 3-5 NWC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Freshman Caden Hodina returned to the mound for the first time in three weeks and pitched two hitless innings in his first start since February 24. The righty faced eight batters, walking two and striking out one.

Will Heron hit a lead-off single to left field in the second inning for the first hit of the day for either team. The junior advanced to second on a passed ball and then to third on a wild pitch during freshman Bret Potter's at-bat. Potter hit a hard ball up the middle to Linfield second baseman Danny Kahn, who mishandled the ball, allowing Heron to score and Potter to reach safely. The Wildcats struck out the next two Pioneers batters to strand Potter, but Lewis & Clark took the lead 1-0 after the second inning.

Junior Kyle Wilsie entered for the Pioneers in what would become a bullpen game and retired six of the first seven batters he faced in the third and fourth innings, striking out three of them. The only batter Wilsie was unable to retire in that stretch was catcher Tyler Marr, who hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth inning to tie the game.

Brennen Davis led off the bottom of the inning with a double to center field for the Pioneers. Lewis & Clark was unable to capitalize with the junior in scoring position, though, as the Wildcats retired the next three batters.

Wilsie recorded two quick outs to start the fifth inning, inducing a groundout to third and a popout to second. Linfield quickly loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch, a single, and a walk. The Wildcats' Elijah Maris took a 1-0 pitch and hit a grand slam to go up 5-1. Wilsie retired the final batter of the inning with a strikeout.

Lewis & Clark threatened in the bottom of the inning as freshman Michael Aikawa earned a lead-off walk. This was followed by a single to center from classmate Connor Broschard and a walk from senior Jack Savant to load the bases with one out. Sophomore Brandon Gonzaga hit a ground ball to third base, forcing Broschard out but allowing Aikawa to score and getting one of the runs back to make it 5-2. Linfield escaped the inning by getting a ground out on the next at-bat.

Linfield added three runs in the sixth and five runs in the ninth for insurance to secure the win and break Lewis & Clark's season-high five-game winning streak.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Heron leads the NWC with 187 putouts this season.
  • Savant is third in the NWC with 54 assists, and Gonzaga is fifth with 52 assists.
  • Freshman Shane Buchbinder pitched a career-high three innings against the Wildcats.
