Wellesley College Defeats Women’s Tennis In Non-Conference Match

Susanna Anand earns 13th win with three-setter at first singles

PORTLAND, Ore. –Lewis & Clark College women's tennis hosted Wellesley College in their final match before spring break, falling to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Team 8-1 in the L & C Tennis Dome on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Susanna Anand earned her 13th singles win of the year with a three-set win at number one singles to earn the lone point for the Pioneers. The sophomore defeated Suzanne Xu 4-6, 6-3, 10-8.
 
Wellesley quickly took control of the dual by sweeping the doubles matches. In the first flight, Anand and senior Seraphina Vossen lost 8-2 to Annissa Mu and Melinda Alviar. Freshman Charlotte Makoni and junior Kacie Lau dropped their match 8-3 to Kriti Sarav and Lily Cade in third doubles. While in the second doubles match, senior Arielle Bloom and junior Hayley Kreps lost 8-2 to Emilee Pak and Xu.
 
Bloom lost the first set of the fourth singles match to Sarav 6- 3 before losing the second set 6-0.
 
The Blue earned the fifth team point needed to secure the dual with a win in the third singles match. Freshman Emma Loucks had a 2-1 lead in the first set against Veda Madhusudan but fell in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
 
Vossen played two close sets against Alviar in the second singles flight but ultimately lost the match 7-5, 6-4.
 
Kreps took on Dalia Khera in the fifth singles match and also played two close sets. The junior dropped the match 7-5, 6-4.
 
Makoni was the last Pioneer to finish, playing Jennifer Fan in the number six match. Makoni lost set one 6-3 but won the second set 6-2 to force a 10-point third-set super tiebreak. Fan too that set 10-3.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Anand went 4-1 in the month of March in singles play and is 7-3 in her last 10 matches.
  • Vossen's winning percentage at number two doubles this spring is .545 (6-5), one of three singles spots with a winning percentage above .500.
  • Makoni, Bloom, and junior Allison Gabelman have all contributed wins to a 6-4 record at number six doubles this season.
WHO'S NEXT
 
The Pioneers are off until April 6 when they will travel to Willamette University for a non-conference match at 11:00 a.m.
