Softball Secures First Doubleheader Sweep Of The Season

Charlize Pope allowed one run in her second-collegiate complete game

KERRVILLE, Texas—Lewis & Clark College softball scored multiple runs in six innings and allowed just five earned runs to earn their first doubleheader sweep of the season on Saturday afternoon at Mountaineer Field.Ā

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lewis & Clark racked up 20 total hits and sophomore pitchers Maggie O'Leary and Charlize Pope combined to allow two earned runs over 13.1 innings, to earn their first two wins in Texas.Ā

Freshman Harper Campanella went 4-9 with two runs scored, two RBI and a double. Sophomore Emily Patton added three hits, two runs scored and four RBI and Madison Scroggins added two hits and five RBI.Ā

GAME ONE RECAPĀ 
Ā 
Lewis & Clark posted season-highs for runs/RBI (10), walks (six), steals (three) and hit by pitches (two) to earn a 10-5 win over Schreiner.
Ā 
Scroggins racked up a career-high four RBI and finished 1-3 with a run scored. Campanella added three hits, a run, a stolen base and an RBI. Patton tacked on two hits, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Sophomore Gina Ozuna finished 2-3 with a run scored, two RBI and a pair of walks.Ā

In the circle, Maggie O'Leary came on in relief with two outs in the first and went the final 6.1 innings pitched. She struck out a season-high 11 batters and scattered five hits, two runs (one earned) and walked four.Ā

The Pioneers took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With two runners in scoring position and two down, Patton and Campanella each scored on an error by the third baseman.Ā

Schreiner answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. With runners at the corners and three runs already in, O'Leary came on and struck out the next batter to keep the game at 3-2.Ā

Lewis & Clark took the lead for good in the third. Ozuna opened the inning with a walk and Patton and Campanella each singled to load the bases. Scroggins made it 4-3 Lewis & Clark with a two-run single.Ā

The Pioneers blew the game wide open in the fifth. The Pioneers loaded the bases on a Scroggins hit by pitch, an error and a Lacey Marglin pinch-hit single. Makena Dahir made it 5-3 with a pinch-hit, bases-loaded walk. Sofia Garcia followed with a pinch-hit, bases-loaded hit by pitch to make it 6-3. Ozuna added a two-run single to score Katie Ingersoll and Dahir.Ā

After Schreiner scored a single run in the fifth and the sixth to get back within 8-5, Lewis & Clark capped off the scoring with two final runs in the seventh. McKenna Zehnder started the inning with a triple and Alyssa Hoeke followed with an infield single. With both runners in scoring position, Patton made it 9-5 with a sac fly and Hoeke scored on a Campanella grounder.Ā

GAME TWO RECAPĀ

Pope finished one-out shy of her first collegiate shutout and Patton delivered a bases-clearing double in the sixth inning to help the Pioneers sweep the Mountaineers.Ā

Pope turned in one of the best starts of her collegiate career. The sophomore threw a complete game for the third time in her collegiate career and allowed four hits, one run, while striking out four.Ā 
Ā 
Dahir and senior Mari Alvarez were the lone Pioneer to finish with multiple hits. The freshmen center fielder went 2-4 with a double. Alvarez finished a perfect 2-2. Ozuna added a hit, two runs scored and a walk.Ā

For the second-straight game, Lewis & Clark jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Ozuna opened the game with a walk and raced home on a Campanella one-out double. After Alvarez singled to put runners on the corners, Scroggins drove in Campanella with an RBI groundout to third.Ā

Pope limited the hosts to just two singles over the first five innings to keep the game at 2-0.Ā

The Pioneers gave her some insurance in the fifth inning. Dahir opened the inning with a double and Sam Gildersleeve followed with a pinch-hit walk. After Marglin was hit by pitch to load the bases, Patton delivered a three-run double to extend the lead to 5-0.Ā

Schreiner managed to get on the board with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but Pope induced a foul out to first base to end the contest.Ā

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Pope's seven innings pitched in game two are a career-high. She threw all six innings in a 9-1 mercy-rule victory over Pacific University on March 14, 2023 and on Thursday against Schreiner University.Ā 
  • Garcia made her offensive collegiate debut in game one. She had made two appearances in the circle prior to Saturday.Ā 
  • Marglin made the first two appearances of her sophomore season on Saturday. She went 2-4 with a run scored, a hit by pitch and started in right field in game two.Ā 
  • Sophomore Megan Yanagi made her season debut in game two and worked a walk.Ā 
  • Sophomore Lola Jarrette earned her first two appearances of the season on Saturday. Jarrette went 0-1 and scored a run.Ā 
  • The two teams were meeting for the first time ever.Ā 
  • O'Leary's 11 strikeouts were the second-most of her career. She struck out 12 batters, also in a relief outing, over 6.2 innings against George Fox University on March 31, 2023.Ā Ā

The Pioneers will close out their Texas trip with a doubleheader on Sunday against Trinity University (Texas). The two games will be played at 9 and 11 a.m. Central (7/9 a.m. Pacific).Ā
