Softball Splits With Sagehens To Wrap Up Non-Conference Play

Harper Campanella hit two home runs on Saturday

PORTLAND, Ore.—Freshman Harper Campanella hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs and sophomore Charlize Pope allowed one unearned run in six innings to lead Lewis & Clark College softball to a doubleheader split with visiting Pomona-Pitzer.

THE BASICS
Pomona-Pitzer 3, Lewis & Clark 2
Lewis & Clark 5, Pomona-Pitzer
(Lewis & Clark 10-6)
(Pomona-Pitzer 8-9)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both of Saturday's games were characterized by strong pitching and defense with the Sagehens stealing game one thanks to a three-run home run by Morgan Groves in the top of the fifth inning of game one.

Campanella hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first of game two and the Pioneers added runs in three-straight innings to wrap up non-conference play with a .500 record (6-6).

GAME ONE RECAP

Pomona-Pitzer All-American Devin Waddell allowed just one hit over seven innings and Groves hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth to lead the Sagehens to their seventh win in eight games. Waddell also finished 4-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored.

Campanella delivered the Pioneers lone hit of the game in the bottom of the first, when she crushed a two-run homer over the center-field fence. Sophomore Gina Ozuna worked Lewis & Clark's lone walk of the game and scored in front of Campanella. Mari Alvarez, Emily Patton and Campanella each were hit by a pitch.

In the circle, sophomore Maggie O'Leary was the tough-luck loser. She worked in and out of trouble through the first four innings, before allowing all three of her runs in the fifth. O'Leary went 4.2 innings and allowed seven hits and one walk, while striking out five. Freshman Sofia Garcia came on in relief and had her best collegiate outing. Garcia stranded a pair of runners with a strikeout to end the fifth and went 2.1 scoreless innings and gave up just one hit and one walk.

Pomona-Pitzer put two runners on in the top of the first inning on a single and a hit by pitch. O'Leary struck out the next two batters to strike out the side. She would strand two runners on in three of the first four frames.

Lewis & Clark took the lead in the bottom of the first. Ozuna walked, moved to second on a Madison Scroggins sac bunt and trotted home on Campanella's third homer of the season.

Pomona-Pitzer struck for all three of their runs in the fifth. Waddell doubled to center field for her third hit in three at-bats. She moved to third on a sac bunt and Brooke Bullis was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Grove made Lewis & Clark pay with a home run to dead center.

Waddell retired the final 11 batters she faced to close out the win.

GAME TWO RECAP

Pope shut down the Sagehens offense and Lewis & Clark came through with timely hits in the middle innings to wrap up their first homestand on their new turf field 6-2.

Pope held Pomona-Pitzer to four singles and one unearned run to move to 4-2 on the season. The sophomore struck out five and didn't walk a batter. Sophomore Tallulah Sickels came on for the seventh and worked around a leadoff hit for a scoreless inning of work.

Campanella went 2-3 with a run scored, two RBI and her team-leading fourth home run of the year.

Senior Mari Alvarez went 2-2 with a walk and RBI and pinch hitters Lacey Marglin (bunt single) and Makena Dahir (double) each added RBI.

With two down in the bottom of the first, Campanella hit a fly ball just over the left-field fence for a 1-0 advantage.

After allowing a leadoff hit in the top of the first, Pope settled in and retired nine in a row to keep the Sagehens off the board.

Lewis & Clark gave Pope some insurance in the third inning. Katie Ingersoll put down a bunt in front of the plate and the throw to first was wide of first base for the first error of the day for either side. Ozuna put down a sac bunt to move Ingersoll to second and Ingersoll took third on a wild pitch. Campanella made it 2-0 when she hit a high, deep fly ball to center to easily score Ingersoll on a sacrifice fly.

The visitors scored their lone run of the game in the fourth. With one out, Kylie Liu singled up the middle. She raced all the way to third with two outs when the Pioneers dropped a pop-up in shallow left field. Bullis followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1.

Lewis & Clark got the run right back in the fourth. Alvarez worked a leadoff walk and pinch runner Pippi Jepsen stole second. Jepsen moved to third on a sac bunt and raced home when Dahir hit a grounder past the third baseman and just inside the third base bag for a pinch-hit RBI double.

The hosts blew the game open in the fifth. Ozuna opened the inning with an infield single and Scroggins followed with a single of her own. Campanella hit another deep fly ball to center that allowed Ozuna to move to third base. Marglin came on as a pinch hitter and hit a perfect bunt in front of the plate that scored Ozuna and allowed Marglin to reach first. Alvarez made it a 5-1 game with a hard-hit single up the middle to score Scroggins from second base.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Campanella is riding a five-game hitting streak and is 6-9 during that span. She leads the team with four home runs and sits second with 10 RBI.
  • Saturday's game two was the second time this season Pope allowed zero earned runs over six or more innings.
  • The Pioneers improved to 7-3 against Pomona-Pitzer since 2012. Lewis & Clark has swept or won at least one game during a doubleheader in all four doubleheaders between the two sides dating back to 2013.
  • Garcia's game one relief outing was the best of her collegiate career. The freshman threw a career-high 2.1 innings in her first home appearance in the circle.
