Defending NWC Champions Sweep Women’s Tennis

Seraphina Vossen was one of three Pioneers to win at least three games in singles.

WALLA WALLA, Wash. –Lewis & Clark College women's tennis faced their toughest test in Northwest Conference play this season, falling to defending champion Whitman College 9-0 on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Whitman only lost three games in their first two wins during doubles play to start the match. Charlotte Makoni and Arielle Bloom fell 8-1 at second doubles, while Susanna Anand and Seraphina Vossen lost 8-2 to number one doubles.
 
The number three doubles match was the closest of the day. Freshman Emma Loucks and junior Kacie Lau won four games against Illina Jha and Sascha Wells before losing 8-4.
 
Loucks lost 6-0, 6-0 at number three singles to Arianna Castellanos as Whitman took a 4-0 lead.
 
Makoni also dropped her first set 6-0 at sixth singles. The freshman was able to win one game in the second set before losing 6-1.
 
Vossen was able to win three games in the second set against Jha in the second flight. The senior lost 6-0, 6-3.
 
Bloom lost in straight sets at number four singles. The senior fell 6-1, 6-1 to Wells.
 
Junior Hayley Kreps won three games in the first set of fifth singles before dropping the match 6-3, 6-0 to Julia Longpre.
 
Anand won the first set at number one singles 6-2. The sophomore then lost a second close set 6-4 and the third set 10-point super tiebreaker 10-8.
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Anand is 2-3 in three-set matches this season and 5-3 in her career.  
  • After losing to Whitman last season, the Pioneers finished the season 4-2, including a 9-0 win in the match immediately following the loss to the Blues.
  • The Pioneers are currently tied for fourth place in the NWC team standing with Linfield.
