Women’s Tennis Losses Close Match To Whitworth

Charlotte Makoni earns two wins to lead Pioneers.

SPOKANE, Wash. –Lewis & Clark College women's tennis lost one doubles match by two and a singles match in three sets in a close Northwest Conference dual at Whitworth College on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Charlotte Makoni finished 2-0 against the Pirate to lead the Pioneers. The freshman earned her first win with doubles partner, junior Hayley Kreps, at number two doubles, 8-6 over Audrey Judson and Paige Oliver. Makoni then earned the final point for Lewis & Clark at sixth singles with a 7-6 (0) 6-3 win over Judson.
 
Whitworth won the first doubles match of the day in the third flight as Lewis & Clark junior Kacie Lau and freshman Emma Loucks fell 8-4 to Meredith Bedford and Jordan Turner Esposito.
 
Sophomore Susanna Anand and senior Seraphina Vossen lost a close match 8-6 at first doubles to Clara Todd and Gracie Smyley.  
 
The Pirates took a 3-1 lead after Natalie Budge defeated Loucks 6-2, 6-1 in the third flight to start singles play.
 
Vossen and Anand scored the next two points for the Pioneers. Vossen defeated Paige at number two singles 6-4, 6-4. Anand took the first set at number one singles 7-6 (2) over Smyley and won the match with a 7-5 second-set win.
 
Senior Arielle Bloom won the first set at fourth singles 6-4, then lost the second set 6-4 to Turner-Esposito. Bloom fell in the third set 6-3, and the Pirates took a 4-3 lead in the dual.
 
The Pirates clinched the dual with a win at number five singles as Kreps fell 6-0, 7-6 (2) to Todd.   
 
BY THE NUMBERS 
  • Makoni has won three matches against three different Pirates this year, all in straight sets.
  • Anand improved to 2-0 in her career against Smyley.
  • Vossen is 6-4 this spring at second doubles.
 WHO'S NEXT
 
The Pioneers host a pair of exhibition games next weekend, playing the University of Oregon Club Team on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and Bellevue College on Sunday.
