HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior Seraphina Vossen and sophomore Susanna Anand finished 2-0 on the day as the duo earned the sole doubles point for the Pioneer, and each won their singles match in three sets.

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead in doubles as Shanah Denham and Arianna Rader beat junior Kacie Lau and freshman Charlotte Makoni 8-4 at number three doubles. Then Kylie Hull and Cassey Hitch defeated freshman Emma Loucks and junior Hayley Kreps 8-5 in second doubles. Anand and Vossen took Riley Bobkiewicz and Kalli Wiker to a tiebreak at number doubles. Vossen had back-to-back winners at the net to give Lewis & Clark their first point of the match with the 8-7(13-11) win.

Loucks and Hull saw each other again in singles at the three spot. Loucks took the first set 6-1 before falling 6-1, 6-3. Minutes later, Kreps dropped a straight-set decision to Elizabeth Cook, 6-2, 6-4 at number four singles.

Anand and Vossen each faced off against familiar foes as Anand took on Wiker at the one spot and Vossen played against Bobkiewicz at the two. Anand had leads of 3-2 and 4-3 in the first set, but Wiker came back to take the set 6-4. Anand pulled the reverse sweep and won the match 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Vossen Easily took care of Bobkiewicz in the first set, 6-2, before losing a close second, 4-6. The senior pulled the Pioneers within 4-3 against the Bruins when she easily won the third set and won the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

As Anand and Vossen were finishing their matches on courts one and two, senior Arielle Bloom played Sophie Denham at number five singles on court four, and Makoni took on Abigail Bond on court three in the number six match. Bloom fell in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, giving George Fox the fifth and winning point of the match. After dropping the first set 3-6, Makoni took the second set from Bond 7-5. Since the team score had already been decided, the third set was decided by a 10-point tiebreak. Bond took the third set and the match 10-4.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Juniors Soraya Young-Pen and Allison Gabelman each played exhibition matches to conclude the day. Young-Pen dropped a close 8-6 match to Shanah Denham, while Gabelman fell 8-2 to Hitch.
  • The Pioneers won their first doubles point against the Bruins for the first time since April 9, 2022.
  • Last season, Bloom, Vossen, Anand, and Lau all picked up wins in singles in two matches against George Fox. Lau was the only one of the four to pick up wins both times the teams met in dual matches.
