HOW IT HAPPENED
Richards and Mukai were two of the five Pioneers who finished in double figures on Saturday night. Richards scored a season-high 24 points and sank four three-pointers for the fourth game this season to lead the team. Mukai was second on the team with three treys and tied for second in points with fellow senior
Charlotte Carroll with 18 points.
Freshman
Lauryn Frederickson recorded her second double-double of the season, setting career-highs in rebounds (16) and points scored (14). Frederickson was 2-2 from long range and 4-4 from the free throw line.
Kaela Guidry was fifth on the team scoring with 13 points. The freshman came off the bench to go 6-11 (54.5%) from the floor and grab five boards.
The two teams traded baskets to open the game and Richards hit a three to give Lewis & Clark a 9-4 lead just over three minutes into the game. Whitworth hit two free throws at 4:36 to close within 13-11. Guidry then hit back-to-back layups, followed by a trey from senior
Natalie Elstone to make it 20-11 a minute and a half later. The Pirates went on a 9-5 run to close out the quarter and make it 25-20.
Whitworth tied the game at 27-all, then took the lead for the remainder of the half at 35-33 with 4:48 to go. A 9-0 Pirate run gave the Pioneers their most significant deficit of the night with 1:19 on the clock. Mukai and Carroll combined for nine points to cut the Pirate lead to 46-41 at halftime.
Lewis & Clark slowly chipped away at the lead in the third quarter. Frederickson scored her tenth point immediately after grabbing her 11
th rebound of the game to tie the game at 62-62 with 2:42 left in the quarter. The teams went into the final quarter, tied at 64.
The two teams combined for 26 points in the final 10 minutes and neither team led by more than four in that time frame. Richards hit a layup with four minutes left in the game to give the Pioneers a 74-70 lead. Carroll hit three free throws between the 2:46 and 1:33 marks to go up 77-74. The Pirates tied the game, hitting a three with 47 seconds left in the game. Mukai missed a jumper with three seconds left, and the game went into overtime.
Whitworth made two free throws and hit three to start the overtime period and take the 82-77 lead. The Pirates grabbed an 86-79 lead with 1:21 to go, and ten seconds later, Mukai hit a three to cut that lead to 86-82. The two teams traded made free throws, and Whitworth held a four-point lead with 18 seconds on the clock. After a Lewis & Clark timeout, Richards hit a trey, and Whitworth drew a foul to go to the line with 10 seconds left. Ann Dorris drew up a play, and Richards found Mukai on the inbound. Mukai pulled up outside the arc at the top of the key, and the ball went through the net as time expired to give the Pioneers the one-point victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Carroll went over 700 career points, and Richards went over 600 career points in the game. Carroll has 706 career points, and Richards has 615.
- The Pioneers hit a season-high 10 three-pointers in the game and shot a season-high 62.5% from long range. The last time the team hit 10 or more threes was the double overtime victory at Whitworth last season when they made 12. The team has not shot 62% or better from three-point range since they went 7-10 at Willamette on February 19, 2016.
- Frederickson is second in the NWC, averaging 8.7 rebounds per game this season.
- Guidry's 54.5% field goal percentage is second in the NWC this season.
- Carroll made went 10-12 from the free throw line and made 10+ free throws in a game for the second time this season.
- The team made a season-high 20 free throws, the most since going 21-30 against Pacific Lutheran on January 14 last season.
