Poets Hand Women’s Tennis 6-3 Road Loss

Seraphina Vossen, Hayley Kreps, and Arielle Bloom earn wins in singles.

WHITTIER, Calif. – Lewis & Clark College women's tennis earned three-set wins at second and fourth singles and a straight set win at number six singles, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 3-0 deficit after doubles play and Whittier College came away with the 6-3 non-conference win Saturday.

THE BASICS

Whittier 6, Lewis & Clark 3
(Lewis & Clark 0-3)
(Whittier 1-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior Arielle Bloom earned the first win of the day for the Pioneers with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sofia Borovkov Sanakoeva and prevented the Poets from clinching the victory with only five matches completed.

Whittier opened the match with a win at second doubles. Maci Davis and Chanel Zeraatkar teamed up to defeat Bloom and junior Hayley Kreps 8-3.

Soon after, the Poets Manasvi Vardham and Monze Meraz-Lerma bested freshman Charlotte Makoni and junior Kacie Lau, 8-3 in the third doubles flight.

Sophomore Susanna Anand and senior Seraphina Vossen went into a tiebreak against Keely Arendt and Malvika Suryavanshi at number one doubles. The Whittier duo prevailed 7-2 in the tiebreak to take a 3-0 lead into singles play.

Lewis & Clark fell behind 4-0 after Makoni dropped a straight set match at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-1 to Vardham.

Freshman Emma Loucks played a close first set in the third singles flight, before falling 7-5 to Arendt. After Bloom prevented a 5-0 lead by the Poets with her win at number six singles, Arendt secured the win with a 6-3 second set victory over Loucks.

When Whittier scored the fifth point to secure the win, three matches were yet to be decided. Vossen had already started her third set in the second singles match and Kreps had done the same in the fourth single flight. As those third sets had already started they played to completion.

Anand faced Zeraatkar in the number one singles match and Anand cruised to a 6-1 victory in the first set. Zeraatkar snuck out a win in the second set 6-4. The two players had not started their third set when the Poets clinched the team win and played a 10-point super tiebreak. Zeraatkar handed Anand her first loss in singles play this spring, prevailing 10-7.

Vossen earned the second point of the day for Lewis & Clark as she took down Suyahvanshi 6-3 in the third set. Vossen won the first set of the number two singles match 6-3, while her opponent forced the deciding set by taking set number two with the same score.

Kreps earned her first singles win of the spring season with a reverse sweep over Davis in the fourth flight. Kreps lost 6-1 in the first set, then defeated Davis 6-4, 6-3 to earn the point.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Kreps earned her second win playing at the fourth spot; she spent most of last season playing number five singles for the Pioneers.
  • Vossen and Anand are both 4-2 overall this spring as they are 2-1 as a doubles team and 2-1 in singles play.
  • Bloom played the sixth flight for the first time this season, her win gives Lewis & Clark a 2-1 record at that spot.
