THE BASICS

#10/14 Whitworth 48, Lewis & Clark 9
(Lewis & Clark 3-5, Northwest Conference 2-3)
(Whitworth 8-0, NWC 5-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sophomore kicker Thien Hoang set the program record for career points by a kicker to provide one of the highlights of the afternoon for Lewis & Clark. Hoang's 23-yard field goal with 6:39 remaining before halftime moved him into first place all-time with 120 career points.

First year Oa Kamakawiwoole went 22-33 for 187 yards and a touchdown pass. Senior Trey Morris finished 3-3 for 28 yards and fellow senior Trey Morris chipped in seven passing yard (2-3).

Sophomore Jordan Lahusky led the Pioneers with 126 all-purpose yards. He paced the team with 59 rushing yards (seven rushes) and tacked on three catches for 47 yards. Sophomore Chili Stephens added eight rushes for 49 yards and junior Isaac Glover chipped in six rushes for 18 yards.

Senior Devon Guest led the Pioneers receiving corps with seven catches for 86 yards. Sophomore Tyler Tolles added two receptions for 26 yards and sophomore Julius Walker chipped in a two-yard reception touchdown.

Senior Justin Hope led the Pioneers defensively with seven solo tackles and nine total stops. He added a half tackle for loss. Sophomore Jordan Delgado tacked on eight tackles (three solo) and sophomore Charlie Murrin and senior Silas Ticeson each registered five tackles. Sophomore Kahiau Chang registered a sack and senior Ramsen Paz and junior Mitchell Sarmento combined for another.

Whitworth scored on each of their first four drives of the game to take a 20-0 lead with 13:57 to go in the second quarter.

The Pioneers began to generate some offense on their fourth drive of the game as they picked up three first downs, before a fumble at the Whitworth 34-yard line gave the ball back to the hosts. The Pirates made it 27-0 one play later, when Ryan Blair connected with Evan Liggett for a 65-yard touchdown.

Lewis & Clark used an eight-play, 66-yard drive to get on the board. Lahusky opened the drive with an eight-yard rush and a 30-yard catch and Glover added an 11-yard run to bring the Pioneers down to Whitworth's 22-yard line. Kamakawiwoole found Guest for an 11-yard reception to get Lewis & Clark into the red zone for the first time. The Pioneers drive stalled out at the Whitworth four, setting up Hoang's record-setting field goal.

Whitworth threatened to add more points before halftime, but the Pioneers defense came up with a huge stop. After Whitworth drove the ball into the red zone, Donovan le Fevre and Conner Hilberg combined to drag down the Pirates running back to force a fourth and one from Lewis & Clark's 15. Chang came up with a huge tackle-for-loss, as he stuffed Luis Salgado two-yards behind the line of scrimmage for a turnover on downs.

The Pioneers took advantage of getting the ball back. With just 1:11 left on the clock, Guest and Lahusky combined for 74 yards over the next five plays to bring Lewis & Clark inside the 20. On first and two from the two, Kamakawiwoole found Walker for a two-yard touchdown pass with just five seconds left in the half.

Lewis & Clark tried to continue to cut into the deficit on their first possession of the second half, but they were stopped on fourth and two from the Pirates nine-yard line.

Whitworth would score on three of their final four possessions to stretch the lead to 48-9.
