Â
After allowing Willamette to recover the opening kickoff on a muff, Lewis & Clark's defense forced a three-and-out and opened their first drive at their own 20. The Pioneers needed just seven plays to drive down the field and take a 7-0 lead. Stephens and Burnham combined for 58 yards on four touches and Lahusky scored the opening touchdown on a 16-yard pass from Kamakawiwoole.Â
Â
The game would bog down from there with Lewis & Clark turning the ball over due to fumbles (two) or downs (one) over their next three possessions. On the flip side, the defense gave Willamette no room to do anything. The Pioneers forced Willamette to punt on six of their first seven drives and the Bearcats fumbled on the other drive.Â
Â
After Lewis & Clark fumbled near midfield early in the second quarter, the defense forced a turnover on the next play. Herman hit the running back behind the line and Hilberg pounced on the fumble.
Â
Lewis & Clark extended their lead to 14-0 on their sixth drive of the half. Lahusky started the drive with a 20-yard run that forced a Willamette timeout. On the next play, Kamakawiwoole found Guest streaking down the sideline for a 37-yard touchdown catch with just under eight minutes left in the half.Â
Â
The Bearcats had their best chance to score of the half on their final drive. Willamette drove into the red zone for the first time all game but Baum and Chavez combined for a six-yard sack on third and six to force a field goal attempt. Junior
Jack Warren got a hand on the field-goal to keep the visitors off the board.Â
Â
The Pioneers pushed their lead to 21-0 late in the half. Lewis & Clark started with the ball from their own 24 and used a big 14-yard catch from Zaso to extend the drive on a third and three. On the fifth play of the drive, Lahusky broke through the hole and scampered 55 yards to make it 21-0 with less than 15 seconds to go before halftime.Â
Â
Willamette scored on their second drive of the second half to make it 21-7 but the Pioneers would respond two drives later.Â
Â
Kamakawiwoole connected with Lahusky (31 yards), Walker (19 yards) and Wood (10 yards) to move the ball 60 yards in four plays. On first and goal from the one, Morris converted on the QB sneak to push the lead to 28-7.Â
Â
Morris closed out the scoring with just over a minute to go in the game when he scampered in from 10 yards out on a designed QB run.Â
