PORTLAND, Ore.āLewis & Clark College women's soccer scored twice in a 12:16 span of the first half and cruised to a 2-0 win over 10-player Linfield University in their 2023 Northwest Conference Home Opener on Saturday.Ā
THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 2, Linfield 0Ā
(Lewis & Clark 3-3, NWC 2-0)Ā
(Linfield 3-2-1, NWC 1-1-1)Ā
HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior
Celeste Schreifels opened the scoring in the 12
thĀ minute and after a Linfield player was issued a red card in the 24
thĀ minute, sophomore
Carson Warfield scored on the ensuing free kick to give the Pioneers all the offense they would need.Ā
Ā
Schreifels' goal was her team-leading second of the season and gave her 50 points for her career.
Ā
Warfield opened her collegiate scoring account with a brilliantly driven free kick for her first collegiate goal and first two collegiate points.
Ā
Sophomore
Megan Yanagi had the primary assist on the first goal and was judged to be fouled by the last defender back on the play that led to the red card and set up Warfield's goal. Fellow sophomore
Abby Morrow picked up the secondary assist on Schreifels goal.Ā
Ā
The Pioneers back line of junior
Abby Hayes, freshman
Kate Meinhard and Morrow teamed up with senior keeper
Sophia Young for their second-straight shutout. Young made two saves to post her 15
thĀ collegiate shutout and second of the year.Ā
Ā
After a pretty quiet opening 10 minutes that included just one shot on target, Lewis & Clark exploded for two goals to take control of the game.Ā
Ā
In the 12
thĀ minute, Morrow dribbled the ball across midfield and played a through ball for Yanagi down the right sideline. Yanagi went into a full sprint to chase the ball and just in front of the corner flag reached the ball and sent a hard cross into the box. Schreifels ran onto the pass and sent a one-touch shot that squirmed under the keeper and inside the near post for a 1-0 advantage at 11:43.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark doubled their lead at 23:59. Meinhard blasted a long pass from deep inside her own half into the attacking third. Yanagi again showed off her speed and ran onto the ball just ahead of the last Linfield defender. The pair collided and both players were down just outside the box. After a long conversation, the refs showed the Linfield player a red. Warfield stepped up to the free kick and blasted a line drive into the upper left-hand corner for a 2-0 lead.Ā
Ā
Lewis & Clark would continue to generate chances throughout the rest of the game and had a phenomenal chance to add a goal in the final minute. Warfield was denied a brace by a great diving save from Emilee Miller and when the rebound found Schreifels she drilled the post, before
Grace Billings had her shot deflected as the final horn sounded.Ā
Ā
Young was rarely challenged as the Pioneers held Linfield to just four total shots.Ā
Ā
