SPOKANE, Wash. – Lewis & Clark College volleyball overcame an 8-0 deficit to take the second set 26-24 from Whitworth College, but fell three sets to one in Northwest Conference play in Whitworth Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman setter
Ruby Kuerschner recorded her third double-double (16 assists, 12 digs), and junior middle blocker
Emily Strand knocked down six kills and stuffed Pirate hitters five times to lead the Pios at the net.
Whitworth jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set, but Lewis & Clark fought their way back to tie the set at 10-all on a kill by Strand. The Pioneers took their only lead of the set as junior
Bethany Ballesteros aced the Pirates. Whitworth pulled ahead again and took a 21-15 lead before Lewis & Clark made another run. An ace by senior

Christi San Diego pulled the Pios within 21-18 before the Pirates closed out the set.
A kill by Strand ended the Pirates' eight-point run to start the second set. The Pioneers fought back using mini runs and immediate side-outs to pull within 16-15 on an ace by Strand. Willis recorded her third ace of the match to pull the Pioneers within 20-18. Another Ballesteros service ace made the score 22-21 Whitworth. Coming out of a Pirates timeout, the Pioneers took their first lead of the set, 23-22, on a kill by junior
Annika Traxler. A service ace by Traxler put the Pios on top for good at 25-24, and then Lewis & Clark evened the match on a ball-handling error by Whitworth.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 4-2 lead to start the third set and didn't relinquish the lead until a Pirate kill made it 8-7. The teams played a back-and-forth set with 11 ties, the last at 20-all off a Strand kill. Whitworth pulled in front 22-20, but the side-out battle continued. Kills by Willis made it 22-21 and 23-22 before the Pirates secured the set.

Katie Shimaura recorded her 800
th career dig at 3-0 in the fourth set on a diving one-armed save, but the point went to Whitworth. A block by Strand and Kuerschner ended the Pirates' five-point opening run. Lewis & Clark pulled within 10-8 when Strand teamed up with Ruark for a block, but the Pios would get no closer the rest of the way.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Three players finished with double-digit digs for the second time this season and the first since the opening match. Shimaura had 18, Kuerschner 12, and Traxler finished with a career-high 11 digs.
- Ballesteros (4) and Willis (3) combined for seven of the Pioneers' 12 service aces, the Pirates had six total aces for the match.
- Traxler led all Pioneers with seven kills in the match.
- Shimaura has 807 career digs heading into next week. She is 33 digs away from taking over the number nine spot on the Lewis & Clark career digs record board.
