Baseball Falls In NWC Winners’ Semi-final to Boxers

The Pioneers play Whitman, with the winner advancing to the championship.

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – In a battle of the top two teams in the conference #2 Lewis & Clark College fell to #1 Pacific University in the double-elimination Northwest Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon for their first loss of the tournament and first in seven games.

THE BASICS

Pacific 9, Lewis & Clark 3
(Lewis & Clark 27-12, 15-9 NWC)
(Pacific 23-10, 18-6 NWC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers fell behind early to the Boxers, going down 7-0 after two, but held Pacific to only 2 runs the rest of the way.

Lewis & Clark earned one of those runs back in the fifth inning when junior Jakob Ghammachi hit an RBI single to third base and drove in fellow junior Luke Bass.

In the bottom of the inning, the Boxers scored two runs on an errant throw from center field to go up 9-1.

Down to their last out, senior Dylan Moore stepped to the plate and hit a two-run shot over the left field fence, but it wasn't enough to secure the comeback.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Bass scored two of the Pioneers' three runs in the game.
  • After giving up seven runs on seven hits in the first two innings, junior Luke Ritter only gave up three hits and only one earned run.
  • Moore went 2-4 with two RBI, his eighth home run of the year, and a run scored.
  • Seniors Noah Ferruggia and Kevin Kane only gave up two hits and no runs in the final three innings.
