Baseball Falls to Pirates on the Road

Dylan Moore, Jack Thomson, and Will Heron led Pioneers in loss.

PASCO, Wash. – Seniors Dylan Moore, Jack Thomson, and sophomore Will Heron provided the bulk of the offense as Lewis & Clark College baseball took the early lead in the rubber match with Whitworth University before succumbing 15-9 in a Sunday afternoon Northwest Conference game.

THE BASICS
Whitworth 15, Lewis & Clark 9
(Lewis & Clark 11-4, 3-3 NWC)
(Whitworth 5-9, 2-1 NWC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Thomson hit his third home run of the series to start a four-run first inning for the Pioneers. Sophomore Brennen Davis singled on the next at-bat, advanced to second when junior Luke Bass was walked, got to third on a passed ball, and finally scored on a wild pitch. Heron was also walked to bring up Moore in the lineup. He doubled down the left-field line to score Bass. Heron scored when junior Jakob Ghammachi grounded out to shortstop.

Whitworth answered with a five-run first inning of their own, then added two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to grow their lead to 8-4.

In the sixth, the Pirates intentionally walked Thomson with the bases loaded to score Moore, but that was the lone run for the Pioneers until the ninth inning.

Down 15-5 in their final at-bat, Heron stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a two-run single to score Thomson and grad student Jacob Serafini. Freshman Brandon Gonzaga and senior Jack Savant hit back-to-back RBI singles before Serafini flew out to center field to end the game.
