Softball Sweeps Pacific In Return To Huston

The Pios earned their first doubleheader sweep in NWC play of the season

PORTLAND, Ore.—After a month away from the Huston Sports Complex, Lewis & Clark College softball earned a doubleheader sweep over Pacific University in Northwest Conference action on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 4, Pacific 0
Lewis & Clark 9, Pacific 1 (6 Innings)
(Lewis & Clark 10-8, NWC 4-6)
(Pacific 3-11, NWC 1-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Senior Alyssa Abe and freshman Charlize Pope held the Boxers to just seven hits (one extra-base hit) to lead the Pioneers to their first doubleheader sweep in conference play this spring.

Abe threw a complete-game shutout in the opener and Pope held the visitors off the scoreboard for the final six innings of game two.

GAME ONE RECAP

Abe shut down the Pacific offense and the Pioneers scored two runs in the second and added two insurance runs in the sixth, for their third shutout win of the season.

Abe scattered three hits, five walks and one hit by pitch, over seven shutout innings. The senior tacked on three strikeouts in her fourth career complete-game shutout.

The Pioneers managed just five hits of their own, but made the most of them, with all five going for extra-bases.

Sophomore Riley Anderson went 2-2 with two runs, one RBI, one walk, her first collegiate triple and a home run. Mari Alvarez, Mia Lopez and McKenna Zehnder each added doubles.

Lewis & Clark scratched across two runs in the bottom of the second off Pacific ace Mia Barrozo. Anderson hit a bloop down the right-field line that bounced past the Pacific right fielder and Anderson raced all the way to third to open the frame. With one out, Abe hit a hard ground ball down the third-base line, the third baseman snagged it and elected to throw home, but Anderson slid under the tag to make it 1-0. With Abe at second base and two down, Zehnder outlasted Barrozo in a 12-pitch at-bat, when she crushed a double to the wall in left-center to easily plate Abe.

Pacific created their best scoring chance in the fourth. With two down, the Boxers loaded the bases on a walk, single and hit by pitch. Riley Kihara hit a solid line drive to right field but Katie Ingersoll made a running catch to keep the Boxers off the board. The Pios snuffed out another chance in the fifth, when they turned a 5-4-3 inning-ending, double play.

Lewis & Clark added two runs in the sixth. Alvarez led off the inning with a hit by pitch and Anderson followed with a two-run shot well over the center field fence to double the Pios lead.

GAME TWO RECAP

The second game looked like it was shaping up to be another tight pitcher's duel, before the Pioneers scored seven runs across their final two at-bats to earn their second mercy-rule win against an NWC opponent this season.

Pope overcame some early struggles to go all six innings. She allowed four hits, two walks and one run, while striking out four. Pope struck out the side in the top of the second on nine consecutive pitches (12 total pitches for the inning).

Offensively, Lewis & Clark racked up 13 hits, with eight of their nine starters recording at least one base hit.

Emily Patton finished with a team-high three hits (3-4), two stolen bases and added a run. Lainey Honma added two hits (2-3), three runs, two steals of her own, an RBI and a walk. Anderson registered a double, two RBI and a steal. Lacey Marglin and Madison Scroggins each finished with one hit, one run and one RBI.

Pacific scored their only run of the day in the top of the first. With two outs and a runner on second, Sydney Rusin hit a double to right field, but the Pioneers threw her out trying to stretch it to a triple on a perfect relay throw from Marglin to Patton to Zehnder.

Lewis & Clark responded right back in the bottom of the inning. Honma worked a leadoff walk, stole second and raced all the way home on a Patton bunt single-when the Boxers errant throw to first base went into right field.

The Pioneers took the lead in the second. Marglin stepped to the plate to lead off the inning and belted her first collegiate home run over the left-field fence.

Pacific had their best chance to tie the game in the fifth. The Boxers put two runners in scoring position with one out but Pope induced a pop up back to the circle and a fly out to Marglin in right to keep the game 2-1.

Just like game one, Lewis & Clark provided some key insurance runs late.

In the fifth, the Pioneers opened the inning with three-straight singles from Scroggins, Honma and Patton. Alvarez made it 3-1 when she crushed a line drive to the left fielder and Scroggins tagged up and slid in in front of the throw home. After another line out, Lopez singled to right center to score Honma from second.

Lewis & Clark put the game away with a five-run bottom of the sixth. Kalea Kaui opened the inning with a walk and Lola Jarrette followed with a bloop double to put two runners in scoring position. Scroggins drove in the first run with an RBI groundout and Honma followed with an infield single that scored Jarrette. After a Patton single and steal put two runners in scoring position with two down, Anderson laced a double to right center to score both runners and make it 8-1. Lopez walked to put runners on the corners and Sam Gildersleeve ended the game with a line-drive single to right that put the mercy-rule in effect.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • With their shutout in game one, the Pioneers now rank second all-time in program history for shutouts in a single-season. Their three shutouts stand only behind the 2001 team that finished the year with six shutouts in 41 games.
  • With her two-run double in game two, Anderson extended her six-game hitting and RBI streak. She has 10 hits (10-18) and eight RBI during the stretch.
  • The Pioneers five extra-base hits in game one were their most since they racked up six against Pomona-Pitzer in a 10-2 win on March 25, 2022.
  • Marglin (home run) and Jarrette (double) each posted their first collegiate extra-base hits on Tuesday.
  • Lewis & Clark finished the day with zero errors in 13 innings.
  • Anderson leads the NWC with 26 RBI this spring in 18 games. She also tops the OPS (on-base-plus-slugging) at 1.502 and home runs (seven).
  • Honma paces the NWC with her nine stolen bases (9-12).
