Women’s Tennis Bounced Back To Wallop Whitworth

Seven Pioneers earned wins in the 9-0 NWC win.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College women's tennis earned a weekend split and bounced back to thrash Whitman University 9-0 in a Northwest Conference match on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Sophomore Caren Uribe and freshman Yenenesh Cohen started Lewis & Clark's winning day with an 8-4 win over Elizabeth Hopkins and Olivia Corbett at No. 3 doubles. The No. 2 doubles team of junior Arielle Bloom and sophomore Hayley Kreps went the distance in an 8-7 (5) win over Kara Nelson and Meredith Bedford. Junior Seraphina Vossen and freshman Susanna Anand earned the third doubles point with an 8-4 win over Gracie Smyley and Natalie Budge at the No. 1 spot.
 
Vossen earned the first singles point of the day at No. 4 in a 6-1, 6-2 win over Corbett.
 
The winning point was earned at No.2 singles when Uribe gave Budge the first bagel of the day, 6-4, 6-0.
 
Anand returned to singles play and won her first NWC match this spring 6-4, 6-1 over Smyley at No. 1 singles.
 
Bloom dropped the first set 6-4 to Nelson at No. 3 singles before rebounding for a 6-1, 6-3 win in three sets.
 
Sophomore Allison Gabelman only gave up one game in her 6-1, 6-0 drubbing of Hopkins at the No. 6 spot.
 
Kreps completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Bedford in No. 5 singles.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Bloom and Kreps are 5-2 as a team in duals this spring; three of those wins are at the No. 2 spot.
  • The Pioneers snapped a three-match losing streak to Whitworth; they last beat the Pirates in 2018, a 7-2 road win.
  • Through four conference games, Lewis & Clark is 15-9 in singles matches.
  • Cohen and Uribe are now 2-1 as a doubles team this season. 
WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark hosts East Texas Baptist on Monday at 4 p.m. in a non-conference match and will play their third match in as many days.
