Banana Slugs Defeat Women’s Tennis 7-2

Sophomores Kacie Lau and Lauren Smith-Euben make spring season debuts in loss.

Portland, Ore. – Lewis & Clark College women's tennis hosted UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference dual at L&C Tennis Dome Saturday afternoon and fell 7-2 to the visitors.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Pioneers held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play, but the Slugs swept the singles matches to take the dual win.  Sophomore Kacie Lau made her spring season debut with junior Caren Uribe at number two doubles and easily defeated Tanner Rowland and Meghana Damojipurapu 8-3 to earn the first point for the Pios. The number three doubles team of junior Arielle Bloom and sophomore Hayley Kreps won in a tiebreak 8-6 (6) over Daniela Christian and Jolie Seemayer. The Slugs' number one doubles team of Sara Beckman and Natalie Sprenger won the day's first point over freshman Susanna Anand and junior Seraphina Vossen 8-4.
 
Sprenger notched the first singles point for UC Santa Cruz, beating Vossen 6-2, 6-0 at the number three spot.
 
Uribe and Anand were the next to fall at singles for the Pioneers. Uribe lost 6-0, 6-2 to Beckman at the number two spot, and Anand went down 6-4, 6-0 to Damojipurapu at number one singles.
 
Kreps won the most games in singles for the Pioneers but lost in straight sets to Rowland at number four, 6-3, 6-3.
 
Playing in her first dual of the year, sophomore Lauren Smith-Euben fell at the number six singles 6-2, 6-2 to Seemayer.
 
Sophomore Alison Gabelman dropped the first set 6-1 to Christian at the fifth spot before retiring with an injury.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pioneers improved to 3-1 in tiebreaks this season.
  • Bloom and Kreps won their second straight doubles match at the number three spot.
  • Uribe is 2-1 at number two doubles this season.
