(Whittier 3-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a 6-2 setback in the opener, freshman
Tallulah Sickels and sophomore
Riley Anderson combined to help the Pioneers hand the Poets their first loss of the season.
GAME ONE RECAP
Freshman
Lainey Honma went 3-3 with a stolen base in her first collegiate softball start, but the hosts jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two and the Pioneers comeback efforts fell short.
Freshmen
Emily Patton and
Madison Scroggins, junior
Mari Alvarez and Anderson all added singles in the loss.
In the circle, freshman
Maggie O'Leary made her first collegiate start. She allowed five hits, one walk and five runs, while striking out two in 1.2 innings. Senior
Alyssa Abe came on in relief and scattered four hits, one walk and one run over the final 4.1 innings.
Whittier senior Katelyn Calvetti earned her first win of the year by allowing two runs over seven innings.
The hosts jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one and used two home runs in the second to extend their lead to 5-0.
Lewis & Clark broke up the shutout bid in the fifth. Freshmen
McKenna Zehnder worked a leadoff walk and was replaced on the base paths by freshman
Lola Jarrette. Jarrette took second on a wild pitch and scored on a Patton RBI single.
After Whittier answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth, Lewis & Clark put pressure on the hosts in the final two innings. In the sixth, Alvarez and senior
Kalea Kaui opened the inning with walks and the Pios loaded the bases with no outs on a Scroggins single. Whittier came through with a big double play that freshman
Gina Ozuna scored on.
In the seventh, Lewis & Clark put three runners on. Patton worked a walk but was eliminated on another double play. Honma followed with a walk and freshman
Lacey Marglin worked a walk to put the tying run in the on-deck circle. Calvetti induced a grounder back to the circle to end the threat and the game.
GAME TWO RECAP
Sickels held the hosts to just two hits and Anderson bashed a pair of two-run home runs to help the Pioneers earn the split.
For the second-consecutive outing, Sickels frustrated the opponents' lineup. The freshman scattered two singles and a hit by pitch in her second shutout in as many collegiate outings.
Anderson and Kaui provided all the offense Sickels would need. Anderson went 2-3 with two runs and four RBI. Kaui, who was on base for both of Anderson's homers, finished 2-4 with two runs and two RBI of her own. Patton posted the Pioneers only other hit in the game.
After both pitchers retired the sides in order in the first and second innings, Lewis & Clark opened the scoring in the top of the third.
Sickels was the first batter to reach in the game when she led off the third with a walk. Sophomore Kate Ingersoll followed with a hit by pitch, but Whittier's Jamie Garvey settled down and recorded back-to-back groundouts to leave Ingersoll and senior
Alyssa Hoeke in scoring position with two down. Kaui broke the deadlock with a two-run single to left to score both runners. Anderson followed with a two-run shot to right-center to make it 4-0 Pioneers.
Whittier finally recorded their first hit in the bottom of the fourth with two outs. Junior Marissa Flynn singled to right-center to break up a streak of 11 consecutive outs to start the game for Sickels.
In the top of the fifth, Kaui doubled with two outs and Anderson crushed a homer over the left-field fence to make it 6-0.
Whittier put together their best scoring chance in the seventh. With two outs, Maya Palos was hit by a pitch and Jocelyn Signretti followed with a single to put two runners on for the first time. Sickels induced a ground ball to close out the win.
