Whitworth who sits tied for first in the Northwest Conference with #4/9 Linfield University and just outside the top-25 in the National Polls used a dominant offensive display to jump out to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Southern Utah University transfer quarterback Austin Ewing connected with running back Luis Salgado for a 24-yard touchdown on the Pirates opening drive of the day.
The Pioneers had a great chance to respond on their next drive. On their first play from scrimmage, Washington raced down the far sideline before ultimately being tackled at the three-yard line for a 69-yard gain. The Pioneers couldn't crack the Pirates defense inside the five though and were ultimately stuffed on a fourth-down conversion attempt.
Whitworth responded by driving 96 yards to make it 14-0 on a 13-yard Ewing rush. The visitors tacked on a third touchdown on the final play of the quarter, when Solo Hines scored on a 15-yard scamper.
Lewis & Clark responded with a 16-play, 77-yard drive. Morris found McGee for a huge 19-yard catch on fourth and eight from the Pirates 38 to keep the drive alive. After a pass interference call on the defense in the end zone, Lewis & Clark was able to break the plane on fourth down. Senior quarterback
Cruz Montana jumped up and reached over a jumble of defenders to score on fourth and goal from the one.
Whitworth would add two touchdowns within 1:56 of each other late in the half to extend their lead to 35-7. The Pirates got the ball back one final time late in the half but the Pioneers forced a field goal attempt with one second remaining. Scott came off the edge and jumped up to block the field goal and deny the visitors a chance to extend their edge.
Lewis & Clark scored on their second drive of the third quarter. On second and 10 from their own 29, Morris found Burnham streaking down the far sideline and Burnham went all the way to the Whitworth 12 before stepping out of bounds. On third and four from the four, Morris found Holton streaking across the middle for a four-yard touchdown catch.
The Pioneers scored their final touchdown early in the fourth. Montana connected with sophomore
Jordan Lahusky (16 yards) and Stephens (13 yards) on back-to-back plays to put the Pioneers just outside the red zone. After a Whitworth pass interference pushed the ball to the 10, sophomore
Lindell Betts rushed for seven yards on first down. Washington punched it in on the next play for a three-yard rushing score.
