Schwartz Scores Men's Soccer's First Goal In Tight 3-1 Setback

Freshman Ben Schwartz scored the Pioneers first varsity goal since 1991

PORTLAND, Ore.—Freshman Ben Schwartz scored the first goal for Lewis & Clark varsity men's soccer since 1991 in a 3-1 loss on Monday evening at Griswold Stadium.

THE BASICS
Linfield University 3, Lewis & Clark 1
(Lewis & Clark 0-2)
(Linfield 1-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Facing their first Division III opponent in a regulation game, Lewis & Clark played the visiting Wildcats even until the final five minutes of regulation. Linfield's Sid Kosaris scored a pair of goals in the final 4:08 to lift the Wildcats past their future conference opponents.

In the 44th minute, Lewis & Clark earned a free kick and on the lofted ball into the box, Levi Stahl was taken down to earn a penalty kick. Schwartz calmly stepped to the penalty spot and drilled his shot into the lower right-hand corner at 43:27 to tie the game at 1-1 and net the Pioneers first goal in a game that counts since 1991.

The Pioneers defense would hold strong for almost the entire second half with freshmen Ben Tallent and Kaushal Riedman leading the way. Tallent made a career-high nine saves in the loss and Reidman was constantly coming up with important interventions to break up Wildcats chances.

Linfield earned a penalty kick of their own in the 74th minute, but Patrick Moes skied his shot wide of the right post to keep the game deadlocked.

Linfield finally broke through in the 86th minute, when Kosaris received a chipped pass from Seamus Miller and slid it past Tallent for the go-ahead goal. He added an insurance goal at 88:40 to put the game out of reach.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Linfield held a 30-2 edge in shots and 12-1 lead in shots on goal. The Wildcats amassed a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • The Pioneers have scored a goal on their last two shots on goals. On Sunday, Andrés Soto Hernández scored a free kick goal on the Pioneers only shot of the game in a 1-0 exhibition game victory over Edmonds Community College.
  • Last Monday, Linfield's Reserve Team earned a 1-0 win over the Pioneers in McMinnville.
  • Monday's game was the Pioneers first game against a future Northwest Conference foe. The Pioneers still have six more games against teams in the NWC.
  • Freshman goalie Declan Cloutier made his debut as a field player in the loss.
  • The contest wrapped up a span of four games in five days for the Pioneers.
