(Lewis & Clark 4-3)Ā
Ā
HOW IT HAPPENED
Ā
Seniors
Brenden Patrick (27 points) and
Jack Henderson (22 points) combined for 49 points to help the Pioneers go above .500 (4-3) for the first time this season.Ā
Ā
With six players out for the Pioneers, Lewis & Clark relied on just eight players for the majority of the game.Ā
Ā
Patrick continued his torrid streak with a team-best 27 points on 12-21 shooting. He added seven rebounds, two assists and hit all three of his free throw attempts.Ā
Ā
Henderson posted his first double-double of the year with 22 points (7-16 shooting, 5-10 from deep) and 10 rebounds.Ā
Ā
Freshman
Matt Hoffman was the final Pioneer in double-figures. He matches his career-high with 18 points and hit six of his 10 shots and went 4-5 from deep.Ā
Ā
Graduate student
Tyler McFarland erupted for a season-high nine points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes of action. Sophomore
Ryan Trunkett chipped in eight points, tied his season-high with six rebounds and doubled his career-high with six assists.Ā
Ā
Trazil Lane, Mycole Rodriguez and Malachi Rogers combined for almost all of the visitors' points. Trazil posted a game-high 37 points on 16-20 shooting in 40 minutes of action. Rodriguez added 27 points and a team-high eight rebounds and Rogers tacked on 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.Ā
Ā
The non-conference contest was much tighter than anticipated. A year ago, the two sides met at Pamplin Gymnasium and the Pioneers cruised to a 101-57 win. This year's Eagles team with Lane and Rodriguez provided a much better test for Lewis & Clark.Ā
Ā
Neither side led by more than six points in the opening half with Lewis & Clark opening up a 30-24 edge with 5:10 to go in the half. Northwest Indian responded with a 7-1 run to tie the game at 31 and eventually took a 42-40 advantage into the break.Ā
Ā
Rodriguez would score the opening basket of the second half to give his team a 44-40 lead, but Lewis & Clark answered with a 12-1 run to take a lead they would never give up. Henderson opened the flurry with a three and and Trunkett his one of his own to give the Pioneers the lead for good. Hoffman made it three triples in a row on the next possession and after an Eagles free throw, McFarland hit one of his two threes to make it 52-45 with 17:21 left.Ā
Ā
Northwest Indian would hang around for the next eight-plus minutes, including cutting the deficit to two on two occasions. Lewis & Clark finally took put some breathing room between the two sides with a 7-0 run. Henderson sparked the run with another three, Patrick hit two free throws and Hoffman scored on a layup to make it 78-65 with 7:21 to play.Ā
Ā
The visitors never got closer than eight the rest of the way, as Lewis & Clark knocked down eight of their 10 free throws in the second half.Ā
