Women's Basketball Fall to Bearcats in First Conference Road Game

Karli Mukai and Piper Curry combine for 45 points in Pio's loss.

Salem, Ore. – Karli Mukai and Piper Curry notched career-highs with 26 and 19 points, respectively, for Lewis & Clark College women's basketball in a road conference loss to host Willamette University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mukai went 3-5 to start the game with six points, and Curry was 2-2 with a three to add five points of her own. Willamette freshman Emma Floyd hit four shots from downtown to help her team take a 20-13 lead over the Pioneers after the first quarter. 
 
The second started with the Pios down four points after Mukai hit a shot from beyond the arc. Lewis & Clark would keep the deficit in the single digits until after the media timeout. The two teams would only score a combined six points in the final 4:37 of the half. 
 
After halftime, Curry hit a shot from the top of the arc and cut the lead back to nine for Willamette. Later in the quarter, the Pios would face their largest deficit of 25 points with 2:51 left. 
 
The final stanza saw the Pioneers chip into the lead and go on a 13-2 run over a span of 4:48. With two minutes left in the game, the Pios were down by 12 points but would get no closer. Lewis & Clark outscored Willamette in the fourth 22-11, tying for the most points scored in a quarter this season.   
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • For the second time this season, Mukai recorded a scoring career-high. She finished the game 11-27 from the field and hit three of the Pioneers' seven made 3-pointers. 
  • Curry has played two games this season, recorded two career-highs in scoring, and tied her career-high in rebounds (7) that she set on Tuesday night. Curry ended the game 7-10 from the field, 4-5 from deep, and 1-2 from the charity stripe. 
  • Junior Charlotte Carroll pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end. 
  • Senior Kendal Jones and junior Natalie Elstone each chipped in four points. Elstone pulled down six boards, and Jones added another five. 
 
WHO'S NEXT
The Pios return to Pamplin for a non-conference game against Warner Pacific University on Monday at 8 pm.
