HOW IT HAPPENED
The 2022 senior class for the Pios, Brecklyn Beighle, Alexa Myers, Olivia Cowley, Madi Pastores, Cassity Bunjovac, and Jeni Baez, were honored before kickoff on Sunday afternoon for Senior Day. Beighle, Myers, and Pastores were all four-year contributors and this year's Pioneer co-captains. Cowley, Bunjovac, and Baez will all be graduating early after playing the last three seasons for Lewis & Clark. Sara Klott, a grad student player, honored as a senior last season, also played in her final game as a Pio.

The seven players wearing the Orange and Black for the last time were all part of the Pios' starting eleven. The first half against the Lutes was a defensive battle that saw both teams only have one shot on goal. In the 37th minute of the game, junior Celeste Schreifels received the ball from junior Abby Hayes at the top of the box. She was able to turn her defender but her turnaround shot was stopped by Pacific Lutheran keeper Shaylin Cesar in a diving save. Heading into halftime, the Pios had a 4-2 shot advantage over the Lutes, with Schreifels posting three shots.

The second half started with both teams hungry for a score. Hayes intercepted a Lute pass in the 63rd minute and dribbled to the top of the box for a solid shot that went wide right. Beighle took a free kick in the 68th minute. Her 138th career shot was on target from 25-yards out and landed in the hands of Cesar. The Lutes' best chance to take the lead was in the 73rd minute when junior keeper Sophia Young blocked a 20-yard free kick from Julia Causbie; Meghan Michels then found the ball off the bounce. Young again made the save to stop the Lute threat.

The final ten minutes of the game saw four shots by the Pioneers and one by the Lutes. Myers booted a 44-yard free kick in the 81st minute that bounced off the right side of the crossbar and back into the field of play, where a Lutes defender headed the ball out for a Pio corner kick. Hayes then sent another long ball toward the net in the 83rd minute that Cesar had to knock down to prevent the goal. Beighle took another corner kick in the 88th minute that bounced out from in front of the net off Cesar's glove and onto the head of freshman Megan Yanagi. Already on the ground, Cesar had to dive from her knees to prevent Yanagi's shot.

Pacific Lutheran clinched the NWC Championship with the draw, and the Pios finished the year in fifth place.
