George Fox Downs Football 41-20

Silas Ticeson recorded his second interception of the season on Saturday

NEWBERG, Ore.—George Fox University scored two touchdowns in 17 seconds to grab a 27-7 lead early in the second half and never looked back in a 41-20 win over Lewis & Clark College football at Stoffer Stadium.

THE BASICS
George Fox University 41, Lewis & Clark 20
(Lewis & Clark 4-4, Northwest Conference 2-4)
(George Fox 7-2, Northwest Conference 4-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

After being outscored 13-0 in the first quarter, Lewis & Clark scored the lone touchdown in the second quarter to go into the break down by only six (13-7). The Pioneers had the hosts pinned back at their own 10-yard line on 3rd and 11, before the Bruins struck for a pair of huge plays to score touchdowns on the next two plays from scrimmage.

Senior quarterback Cruz Montana was held to 201 yards passing and one touchdown in the contest. He finished 22-32 and added eight rushing yards.

Junior Elijah Washington led the Pioneers on the ground with 74 yards rushing on 14 attempts. He tacked on three catches from 20 yards to just fall shy of 100 yards on the day.

Fellow junior running back Dyontae Navarrete added 48 yards on the ground and scored one of the Pioneers three touchdowns.

Junior wide receiver Devon Guest led the Pioneers in the air with eight catches for 57 yards and a touchdown. Senior Sean Bodi and junior Burnham finished with 47 and 46 yards receiving and senior tight end Adrian Daffy posted a line of three catches for 34 yards and a touchdown.

Junior Justin Hope led the Pioneers with seven tackles (three solo) and a fumble recovery. Freshman Daryl Scott saw his most playing time of the season and recorded a team-high five solo tackles and finished second with six overall tackles. Senior Jake Bushman and freshman Jack Warren (1.5 tackles for loss) matched Scott with six tackles.

Freshman Jay'Den Dock (1.5 tackles for loss) posted the Pioneers only sack and forced a fumble. Junior Silas Ticeson registered three tackles and his second interception of the season.

The first quarter tilted heavily in favor of the hosts. Lewis & Clark's first two drives stalled out around the 50 and ended in Huxley Richardson punts. On the flip side, George Fox used drives of seven plays and three plays to grab a 13-0 lead after 15 minutes.

The second quarter looked like it could be more of the same, but momentum changed when Ticeson picked off Haiden Schann at the Lewis & Clark 20.

Lewis & Clark drove 80 yards over 10 plays to cut the deficit in half to 13-7. Montana found Jonathan Newsome for a 12-yard catch, Washington broke off a 29-yard run and Navarrete added a nine-yard rush to put the Pioneers inside the 10. On first and goal from the eight, Montana connected with Guest to put the Pioneers on the board.

George Fox threatened to score on their next drive, only for Dock to come through with a strip sack at the Pioneers 36.

The Pioneers tried to march down the field and put more points on the board, but they ran out of timeouts and time at the Bruins 30-yard line.

To begin the second half, Lewis & Clark put the Bruins back against their end zone. Facing a third and 11 from their own 10, Schaan connected with William Moffitt for a 90-yard touchdown pass to make it 20-7 George Fox.

After a penalty on the kickoff put the Pioneers on their own 15, George Fox forced a fumble on the Pioneers first play from scrimmage and returned the fumble for a touchdown to make it 27-7.

Lewis & Clark brought it back within two possessions on their next drive. Washington racked up 24 yards on four touches to begin the drive and then Montana connected with Burnham for a 30-yard catch to put the Pioneers on the Bruins one-yard line. Navarrete bulled his way into the end zone on the next play for a one-yard rushing touchdown to cut the deficit to 27-13.

Unfortunately for the Pioneers that's as close as it would get. George Fox scored on their next two drives to make it 41-13 early in the fourth quarter.

The Pioneers used a lengthy 15-play, 95-yard drive to close out the scoring. Seven different players rushed or caught a pass on the drive, with junior Trey Morris coming on late in the drive. Morris ran for 10 yards on 4thand 8 to extend the drive and then found Daffy for a 27-yard touchdown.
