Senior Mari Alvarez was the co-winner of the ChamPIOn award at the 2023-24 ELCY Awards. The ChamPIOn award honors student-athletes yearly who exemplify Building ChamPIOns: Excellence in Competition, the Classroom, in our Community, and their own personal Character. The individual must demonstrate the true Pioneers Spirit and the culture of Building Champions. Alvarez has been a key figure in L&C Athletics, working various jobs, interning with Specialty Athletics, and serving on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) board. On the softball field, she became the first four-time All-Conference player in program history. This season, she split her time between first base and catcher, leading the team in several categories, including a .339 batting average and 34 RBI. Alvarez's impressive performance included 11 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI contests. Earlier this spring she graduated with a psychology degree and health studies minor.
