Matthew Barreau enters his fifth year as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach in the fall of 2023. He also served as the interim men’s and women’s track & field coach for the 2023 track & field season.

During his first four years working with the program, Barreau has helped bolster the size of both programs and seen the Pioneers make tremendous strides in both cross country and long-distance track competition.

Barreau led Lewis & Clark to the program's best season in over a decade in 2023. Both teams finished in the top-two at the Northwest Conference Championship Meet for the first time since 2012. Junior Riley Buese became the fourth runner in women's program history and first under coach Barreau to win NWCs when she crossed the line in 21:31.7. She was named NWC Women's Runner of the Year for her efforts. At the Regional Championship Meet, Buese (sixth) and Malia Heien (eighth) each finished in the top-10 in the West to earn spots at the NCAA DIII National Championship Meet. Buese would deliver the best performance in women's program history at Nationals, when she posted the highest-ever finish (17th) and fastest-ever time at Nationals (21:25.0). Heien posted a 125th-place finish (22:42.6) in her first-ever National Championship Meet. On the men's side, Lewis & Clark featured a new-look lineup but delivered their best performance at conference since 2012. Freshman Evan Markelz was named the NWC Men's Rookie of the Year after finished third at NWCs. He set the program record for the fastest 8K in program history (24:08.4) and earned All-Region honors after placing 19th at Regionals.

During the 2022 season, the women’s program posted their best finish at an NWC Championship Meet since 2012. The Pioneers placed second overall with three runners earning All-Conference honors and six runners posting top-50 times in program history. On the men’s side, Lewis & Clark set a program record for fastest-average team score at an NWC Championship Meet (25:08) and Max Aldrich (first) and Erik Maack (3rd) ran two of the top-three times in program history to help the Pioneers finish in third place. Aldrich and fellow sophomore Riley Buese each qualified for the National Championship Meet – marking just the second time in program history both the men’s and women’s programs sent a student-athlete to Nationals in the same season.

A coach with over 50 national qualifiers, nearly 100 conference champions and 300 all-conference selections over the last eight seasons, Barreau joined the Pioneers following eight years coaching other NCAA Division III institutions. Over his last two seasons at Coe in Iowa, Barreau produced 10 all-conference selections and two new school records.

In all, Barreau has directly coached seven All-Americans and overseen student-athletes set 70 school records across all divisions of the NCAA. Prior to Coe, Barreau was the head coach at Christopher Newport in Virginia. During his six seasons with the Captains, he coached 47 national qualifiers and his student-athletes posted 27 conference records.

Originally from Oregon, Barreau was an assistant coach at Portland State from 2005-08 followed by a year at Concordia. At PSU, his student-athletes broke 27 school records including 12 freshman marks. The Vikings also had their first-ever all-conference distance runners since entering NCAA Division I. For Concordia, Barreau assisted both teams that achieved their highest finish at nationals with the men's team placing among the top 10.

Before coaching in Portland, Barreau was an assistant coach at Adams State in Colorado and his alma mater, Western Oregon. He also spent six years coaching high schools in Arizona and Oregon.

In addition to his coaching accolades, Barreau is highly involved on cross country committees nationwide. Currently, he is the President of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III Executive Committee.
