Men's Tennis Posts 10th Win With 5-2 Victory Over Linfield

Senior Matt Chio went 2-0 in the victory

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark College men's tennis snapped a two-match losing streak with a 5-2 win over Linfield University on Saturday morning. 
 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Sophomore Joey Lyon and senior Matt Chio each went 2-0 to help Lewis & Clark earn their 10th win of the year. 
 
The Pioneers claimed the doubles point by earning victories at second and third doubles. 
 
In the first match to finish, sophomores Noah Sutin and Lyon knocked off Cameron Paulsen and Matous Young 6-3 at second doubles. 
 
The Pioneers added a second 6-3 win at third doubles. Junior Spencer Loucks and Chio defeated Cody Pickar and Nick Owens to claim the doubles point. 
 
Linfield earned one of their three wins on the day at first singles. Brooks Lerfald and Rogue Stone earned a tight 6-4 win over Pioneers juniors Wade McDermott and Kai Wills
 
Lyon made it 2-0 to begin singles play. The sophomore was up 3-0 on Lerfald at number one singles, when Lerfald had to retire due to an injury. 
 
Chio pushed the lead to 3-0 at fourth singles. The senior cruised past Alexander Rosenquist 6-2, 6-1 to put the Pioneers one point away from a match victory. 
 
Linfield would earn back-to-back wins to stay in the match. Stone defeated Sutin 7-5, 6-3 at number two singles to put the Wildcats on the board. Young added a 7-5, 6-3 win over Wills at fourth single to cut the deficit to 3-2. 
 
McDermott clinched the match win at third singles. In the longest singles match of the day, McDermott knocked off Paulsen 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to extend Lewis & Clark's advantage to 5-2. 
 
First year Arnav Bishnoi closed out the win with a dominant victory at sixth singles. He cruised past Pickar 6-1, 6-1. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • McDermott earned his fourth-straight singles win to extend his team-leading total to 14 on the season. 
  • Sutin and Lyon improved to 9-3 this season at second doubles. The duo are a combined 12-3 this season in doubles and 8-1 in NWC action. 
  • Bishnoi (7-1) and McDermott (7-2) are tied for the team lead in NWC singles wins. 
  • Lewis & Clark picked up their 21st-straight win over the Wildcats. The Pioneers won 12 of the 14 points in their two matches this season. 
  • Loucks and senior Bennett Gazor each played exhibition singles matches. Loucks won his match 6-0, 6-1. Gazor earned a 6-1, 6-0 win in his match. 
  • With the win, the Pioneers have posted double-digit wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since the program accomplished the feat in three-straight years from 2015-16 to 2017-18. 
WHO'S NEXT 
 
Lewis & Clark will host George Fox University on Sunday at 11 a.m. in their final home match of the 2024-25 regular season. The Pioneers will honor seniors Gazor and Chio prior to the match as part of their 2025 Senior Day Ceremony.
